Fat flush? Green smoothie? Help!!

Stacy, on July 15, 2014 at 9:30 PM Posted in Fitness and Health 0 14

I keep reading about all these different home weight loss things. Now, I know I could never drink a green smoothie...lol... but I see different recipes for waters, that say they help flush fat out of your body.... things like lemons, cucumbers, oranges, grapefruit, mint...is this any better than plain water? Does anyone have any opinion or advice to offer?

I'm limited in the exercise I can do because of this damn cast, so I thought maybe this could give me a little jump start...

The list of vegetables and fruits are diuretics. They will help flush the waste you have and most help with water weight. So, it could help you lose a little and help from bloating. Lemon and grapefruit are "suppose" to help with weight loss.

Stacy, none of these flushes or smoothie based diets really, truly work, and are not good for you. I understand your frustration, but drink a lot of water, eat clean snacks every 2, 3 hours to keep your stomach internally active so it doesn't go into starvation mode, and since you can't be active try to just be healthy. When you do these smoothie or flush fads you get dehydrated, malnutrition kicks in and you get sick. There's no fast way to lose weight. Believe me, I've tried. The way I lost weight the fastest was by keeping very hydrated and eating a lot of fiber and protein, and working out every night for 4-5 days straight, but nothing too crazy. Good luck to you.

I did a Blueprint Cleanse for just two days--the green drinks were the hardest to get down, by far (though I learned that adding a ton of lemon to them and putting them over ice made them palatable). For the first day, they weren't so bad but then on day 2 I could barely face them. The other juices were delicious.

I lost about 4 lbs in 2 days...about 2 of those lbs stayed off. It did help re-set my body, I think, though, because after gaining a bit back when I ate normal food again, I am now down about 7lbs from three weeks ago after having no success for months. So...it's no miracle cure, but it did help with the "kick start."

I am going to do it again for two days, but make my own green drink, the week of the wedding. I definitely noticed it helped my stomach be a bit flatter and figured it can't hurt.

(Also, I had tons of energy and no headaches even though I am caffeine addicted usually and cut that out cold turkey for the two days.)

There's so many "miracle" things out there, you never know what to believe.

More power to you ladies that can do the green smoothies...I couldn't even stand the smell.

The reason I'm trying to figure something out is that my dress is a bit uncomfortable, and although I used to exercise regularly, I haven't been able to walk or swim for 5 weeks now, and I wondered if the waters would help. I've been eating sensibly...except for the occasional pint of ice cream- damn Ben & Jerry's- and I don't want anything extreme, but at 3 weeks out, I'm really afraid I won't fit in my dress.

I don't know much about dieting, but one of my co-workers did a 2 week Dr. Oz diet and she lost 15lbs or so. She said she felt satisfied (full) on the diet and is still eating most of the things on the diet, while cutting out the junk. I know there's a breakfast smoothie with lots of protein (FH and I have switched to breakfast smoothies) and lots of low glycemic veggies. Google it, maybe?

@ Hailey- That's kind of what prompted all this... I saw on the Dr Oz website a 10 day plan that's supposed to help flush fat and lose a few pounds, and be the beginning of a healthy weigh loss plan.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a juice cleanse once in a while. I think it is important to stay hydrated since you will go to the bathroom a lot. I think that if you are drinking those healthy juices, it helps make you feel full then you eat less. I think that is the same premise behind drinking a full glass of water before eating. People say having a clear soup before eating a meal works the same way. You fill up on clear soup and you eat less.

Lemon water definitely helps with weight loss. I had great results from the Fast Metabolism diet by Hayley Pomroy but be prepared to shop because you're eating all day. I've never felt so full on a diet. Lost 12 lbs in a month in a healthy way. I've also always juiced to keep my weight down but I love veggie juice lol. Apple carrot celery is my favorite but I will juice anything and gulp it down. You crave it after a while.

Flushes and detox type of things usually are just making you lose water weight/bloat. They don't help with actual fat loss and if it's not done properly can leave you feeling drained and not well.

However, I do love green smoothies for breakfast. I am not a big fruit/veggie fan usually so I find the best way is for me to drink them. One of my favorites is a Pina Colada Green Smoothie. I use 1 cup lite vanilla almond milk, 1-2 cups spinach, fresh pineapple, protein powder, ice, and a dash of coconut extract.

I won't promise that it will make you lose weight just by drinking that but it's healthy and depending on what you usually have for breakfast could be a good option.

You can make a "green" smoothie without it being green. My smoothies consist of fresh kale, peeled carrots, strawberries, a banana, peeled ginger root and blueberries. It is delicious. I add about a cup of milk for protein and a cup of water for consistency and blend it up in the morning. I snack on it after breakfast all the way through lunch.

It makes me feel great. And you can't tasted the veggies.
