Family Style Reception Food

Sam, on May 19, 2021 at 9:05 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14

Hello,

My fiance and I are planning on the family style reception food. We didn't know this was an option until our coordinator gave us the option. She said it's typically a big hit bc each table will get a little bit of everything to try. My future husband was especially thrilled with this option he is of Ukrainian/Russian background and family-style is a very traditional way of presenting food. We are excited about this option bc I've never been to a wedding with a family-style food option! Our guests more than likely be okay with this bc either they have been vaccinated/ same members of the will be seated at the same table/ I think they will like the experience!

I was just curious if anyone has experienced family-style food at a reception? I would love to hear about your experience! Smiley smile

Thanks!

One of my friends had family style and it was a hit. All of the food was good. I was sat at a table with a couple people I knew and several I didn't and it was a good way to get us to interact as well.

    Ashlee,

Thank you for sharing your experience! I think that is a good point especially if there are a few people who don't know each other at the same table. We are excited to have this at our reception!

Have a great day! Smiley smile

We did! It was fun and looked great. We had only 15 guests and three long tables put together to create a giant feasting table but every table had its own meal (entrees, sides) so the plates weren’t passed around too much and every table had plenty of food. Here’s a pic:

It was really fun & intimate! You’re welcome. And your fiancé sounds like he’s really excited about it too.

Just make sure there is enough food, I went to a wedding with family style - the first people who got the food at the table pretty much loaded up their plates, when we asked for more there was no extra

This. The only time i've had family style at a wedding, the portions were tiny and no one really got enough. Just make sure that there is enough food and it will be great!

Good point. Be sure to ask for smaller plates if the food is to be provided at long tables, or perhaps you’re thinking of table rounds (6-10 guests). For example, one of our main entrees was served on three plates so each of our three tables got their own plate of salmon to share. That’ll help.

Make sure that the plates are on the lighter side. You don’t want something that can easily spill like is a potential at family style dinner at home where dishes are heavy and difficult to hold/pass without spilling on yourself. This is ideal if you don’t care about centerpieces because there’s not space for both.

Thank you for the response! Our venue is offering one refill on some of the items. (in case this happens)

    Thanks again!

    Hi Michelle,

Thank you for the response! Good point with the lighter plates. Also, my coordinator already made us aware that our centerpieces either need to be small or thin and tall to make room for the food!

    Thanks again!

Oh good! Glad to hear that! Never want to run out of food or there will be upset guests!

Be careful with tall centerpieces because you don’t want them to block other people from being able to socialize. I’ve been to a couple events where that did happen and guests removed the centerpiece entirely.
