False Advertising

I am so tired of these reception sites false advertising. The website has these beautiful pictures of the site and when you get there its small and looks a mess. Absolutely not what it looked like in the pictures. Then they say they can fit a certain amount of people for a seated dinner with a dance floor. Can't fit the amount of people that I'm having and the dance floor might can fit 5 people on it. These people are really stressing me out. I can't find the right place for nothing. I'm considering changing my seated dinner to a standing reception with passed hors'douvres(?) and cocktails. Anybody else having these problems? Oh and then some of the other places have so many freaking add ons. Its ridiculous.

I felt this way too when we were looking. you just have to keep looking, i swear it felt like we looked for months to find the right place, so don't give up and don't compromise what you want for your reception! you might try herecomestheguide.com that's how i found our venue.

A good thing to keep in mind when looking at venues online is that pictures are not made to scale. Meaning that what looks big in tiny photograph might be big in person. I'm currently in the process of planning my wedding and one thing that my fiance and I have figured out is that it's always a good idea to see the venue in person before booking it.

Also, if they are advertising that they can fit a certain number of people in a certain space, when go for your walk through, remind them of that. Don't be afraid to let them know that you are disappointed. Many times venues will try to get over on brides and grooms and need a little pressure to get things into shape. I that problem with my first choice venue.

While a standing cooktail reception can be done beautifully keep in mind that older guests will not want to stand the entire night. So, maybe providing a lounge area would be a really great idea as well. Good luck.

I am young and standing the whole night- might make me what to leave early-- Remember most of your guest will be in heels and all dressed up- If you do it you might have a few seats for the older people expeacially or pregnant? We looked at 7 sites before we found the one-- we liked several of them and hated some-- but then we just knew. What are you looking for and for how many people. That way people can give you some suggestions.

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding. One of the reasons why I try to encourage couples to seek out the services of a professional event planner, is their ability to screen out the locations and find one that will be perfect for you. If you still have time, my suggestion would be to think about hiring a planner, there are many in our area, but you may want to inquire about the Association of Bridal Consultants, you can find them on line, and there are quite a few certified planners there to pick from. I hope this helps.

FYI, the herecomestheguide.com site mentioned in an earlier post is California-only. I got excited when I thought there was a (new) list of reception sites I haven't already checked out in my region but was disappointed to see that as well Smiley sad Yes it's tough, but you'll find someplace! Smiley smile

Thanks ladies for the responses. I do have a planner but she's for the day of. She has been suggesting some places though. We're going to take a look at one of the places on Friday. If we do decide to have a standing reception, trust and believe that there will be a lounge area. I know I don't plan on standing up the whole time. I might put out some flip flops for guests to be more comfortable if we can afford it. I've been tried to get the opinions of my bridesmaids. I've been getting mixed reactions. The clubgoers would probably love it. I don't know. We're still looking.

Oh yes, I had these problems, and not only with the venue but vendors as well. You really learn as you go what questions you need to ask right up front and how to cut thru the bull. But don't worry, you'll know when it's right, just like with the dress and the groom! Try to have fun looking at not get too frustrated. I think that cocktail/apetizer receptions are so cool and can be a blast but you still have to have seating. Not formal dinner tables with assigned seats and whatnot but scattered tables and chairs. flip flops or not, you just gotta have seats and places for people to set a drink or food down onto. trust me!

I had similar problems all the halls limited what food you could have or what music (one place only allowed their DJ), etc. We finally have decided on a town hall where it's going to be mostly diy for everything which is more planning but we will get everything we want (within budget). So I'd suggest looking at town halls, if you are willing to do more work it may be worth it.

Ive had the same exp. One place claimed they could fit 140 in a room that looked like if you moved to go to the bathroom your bum would graze every table along the way. The dance floor was 20x20 and they had the nerve to tell me we would be able to do a brides dance with 12 attendents on the darn thing. I have friends and family that to say they have a bum is an understatement I would feel so bad if someone felt all jammed up . I did however find a great venue in my area that the price was so good we had reservations on what it looked like, but when we got there it was huge and totally remodled and gorgeous and included: room for 150 ,all the food (sit down) veal and chicken main, bar, cake, toasts, bridal dance booze, hors'douvres, everything. The food is awesome and the cake really really good. All for under 5000.00 Dont get discouraged you just really have to look. But some places really do jerk you around. Good Luck.
