Fall Decorations in September - Availability in Stores?

Sara, on August 10, 2017 at 10:22 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 14

Out wedding is September 15th, and FH definitely wants to have pumpkins there. We wanted to do an October wedding, but all the dates were taken at the venue we wanted. We are getting married at a gazebo with steps leading up to it. I want to do pumpkins and giant pots of mums on the steps leading up to it, and tule on the frame of the gazebo.

Costco is selling big pots of mums in stores now, for $15 each, which seems like a great deal to me. The ones in our local grocery store were $18 for half the size. My concern is that none will be available the week of our wedding - or two weeks prior. I have no idea how long they'd last if we got them two weeks ahead of time...We are planning out of state and there's a weekend between our last visit and travel in for the wedding.

Is it going to be possible to get nice large pots of mums AND pumpkins the week of/prior to September 15th? I don't even know when stores start carrying pumpkins, which is one of the big questions in my post.

Can you order the mums from Costco for pickup at a later date?

I know pumpkins wouldn't be available at retail here 6 weeks before Halloween. They would rot before they were used. Can you contact a grower in your wedding locale? Sometimes you can find lists online- particularly farmer's markets listings. Are there friends or family who could make this contact for you?

    Some contact information:

There's a local farm by my mom's that sells pumpkins about 10 minutes from her house, but they don't list opening until the week after our wedding. I've considered contacting them if necessary, but was hoping to get an idea of when those items typically go on sale in stores.

We could always go the fake pumpkin route, but I'd prefer real ones.

I don't know about your area, but in the Boston area I see mums and pumpkins pretty much from August until November. Are you opposed to using fake pumpkins? They have nice ones at Michael's and they're already 40% off! That might take away any stress related to availability.

Mums are usually pretty hardy plants, as long as you keep them out of direct sunlight (they fry really easily.)

I found this on Pinterest definitely considering using a pumpkin on the table with decor. I would suggest visiting a Michael or craft school. You should be able to small ones.

We are looking for the large ones to decorate gazebo steps, so small ones wouldn't really work

You'll definitely be able to find flowers and that type of stuff in mid-September! My wedding was October 10th and I waited until two days before go to get mums from the nursery. They were on their last few days and I just wanted them for cheap, so the nursery told me to come back right before our wedding because they'd be reduced in price again. We also were able to get corn stalks and pumpkins and other fall decor in late September/early October from farmers markets.

Since your wedding is a month before that timeframe, I think you'll still have an even better selection of fall decor/flowers Smiley smile

Potted mums will last several weeks. I decorate my porch with them every year and they do great until it gets too cold. I would definitely call the farm by your mom's to see if you can't get real pumpkins. Fake would work, but fake is fake and real is always preferred, especially for weddings.

I am in the Boston area and they start selling pumpkins in September. If you are in a bind and don't mind fake pumpkins, Funkins makes realistic looking pumpkins. Not sure how many you need, they can get pricey if you need a lot, but they are pretty cool and carveable! lol. I use them for Halloween, we decorate a lot and it's nice to not have to throw away our hard work!

I just went to Michaels today. They had a ton of fall decor out. Maybe you can try looking there and get inspiration for some other ideas.
