Fake Cake Rentals and Process Advice

Melissa, on October 24, 2019 at 9:36 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 9

Aloha! Looking for advice!

We plan on setting up a "fake cake" by either using a cake that is either completely fake (such as from a rental website/Etsy) or doing a Styrofoam cake that is iced and styled by our bakery friend who loves the idea. We plan on doing sheet cake in the kitchen to serve to guests, however, we're trying to figure out how to go about this process visually without it looking like that's what is being done?

We want to do a cake cutting small ceremony as well which is why I'm leaning towards the Styrofoam icing so we can add a real top layer to it to cut into. Does anyone feel this is unnecessary or frivolous and to just nix the cake cutting ceremony all together?

As someone who's only been to a handful of weddings, I'm worried I'm putting too much emphasis on something that isn't important. Thank you all for being wonderful!

I would nix the fake cake altogether. If you have a bakery friend, I would ask her to make you one tier for the cake cutting, then the sheet cake can be given to guests. Cake is cake, no one will care lol.

My friend did this for pictures. She had the fake cake on top, and after they cut their cake, the cake was wheeled in back for cutting. We were none the wiser that the entire cake except for the top was fake, but it made for some amazing pictures. So I don't see anything wrong with it.

Thanks! That's a good idea to have her do the one tier but I do want a large 3-4 tier for photos and the dessert table spread.

Ahhh, I didn't think about putting the real cake tier on the bottom! That's exactly what we want it for as well, to look great in photos and stand out from the dessert table.

I don’t think tricking the guests is a good idea. I would just get a small round 1 layer cake for you guys to cut for photos and then do what you will for the rest of desserts. You could even get a single layer cake from a grocery store, they have pretty cakes too. Or go less traditional and get a small cheese cake or other... Good luck!

Just have someone make you a small round cake (like a birthday cake) and cut that and take the leftovers home. There is no need for the tiered wedding cake if you're planning to do sheet cake Smiley smile

A friend of mine did this. She had a 4 tier cake with only half of the bottom layer being actual cake for cutting and picture purposes and the rest was Styrofoam. She had a plain iced sheet cake in the back cut for guests. As for PP comment, I don't think of it as "tricking" the guests. More of working in your budget. They are still getting fed cake...
