Has anyone used fabric tape instead of hemming your gown?

I have used fabric tape, but not on a satiny sort of fabric. Why are you considering it?

@crystal my sister wanted to "hem" up her dress with fabric tape so its not altered so she can sell it afterwards. And she doesn't want to pay to have it hemmed.

And then my dress only needs to be hemmed an inch but I can't seeing spending $120 for an inch

It's not just an inch. It's an inch around what is usually a very wide fabric, especially if it is gathered. It's also a white dress which means taking precautions for it to stay super clean. It's not like hemming a pair of pants. You are dealing with copious amounts of material.

As for reselling it, you can take a hem out of a garment (depends on material). Some hem tape leaves residue which might not look good to a prospective buyer.

I don't think hem tape is the answer.

Will you be wearing it at the dance? Is it long?

Basically, if there is any chance someone, anyone, will step on your dress, then NO, fabric tape won't work.

Can your sister just get taller shoes? I have a pair of platform heels I'm wearing so I (hopefully) won't have to pay to have my gown hemmed (about $200/layer here in NYC!). That may be a better option for her. Most dresses are made for a woman that is 5'8" in her wedding shoes. The average height of American women is 5'4", so really, chances are that having the dressed hemmed a bit won't affects its ability to be sold afterwards as much as if the bottom of the dress is damaged from people stepping on it or shoddy fabric tape will. . .

For your dress, do you know anyone who sews? Depending on the fabric, a basting stitch may do the trick without having to actually cut any fabric off the dress. . . Also, what length is your dress? If its shorter and you only need to hem it to get it to hit at the right spot on your leg, then fabric tape may be okay. But if its long and you need to hem it to keep it from dragging, then you may want something a bit more permanent/secure.

My dress can't be hemmed anymore than an inch. Because it has detail so they would only be able to hem below the detail. And my old problem is I'm not going to be able to even have someone look at it until may. Wedding is in June. Db told me my under skirt won't be in til end of April. So hopefully I will be able to find someone I trust in the that short of notice.

As for my sisters dress. She won't hem it. She won't spend the money to have it hemmed. She didn't even buy the dress. My family did cuz she said she couldn't afford it. And my other bridesmaid hasn't even bought her dress yet.

@barbara my sister is like 5'4 5'5. Somewhere around there. She was supposed to try it. On with heels and sent me a pic but she never has and keeps forgetting.

I am barely 5' and I bought 3 and half inch heels. I don't know anyone I trust that I could ask. My aunt swears by this lady in my town. She takes pants and stuff there. But she barely speaks English and I worry she isn't gonna understand and mess up the dress.

The english thing wouldn't bother me. Loads of immigrants in this area who tailor, so it's expected. I would want to know how much experience she has with dresses like yours, especially now that you say it's only the front getting hemmed. They will have to hem it in such a way so that it tapers and doesn't look like 2 different lengths.

Keep looking around for seamstresses-- yelp should have some reviews for people local to you. DB is known to charge more than local tailors/seamstresses, so you should be able to find someone able to do it for less.

I think I may have found a lady. One of my friends got married last year and she gave me the number for her lady. Her alterations plus bussel were 60 dollars and she has her own shop. So I'm going to call her and try to get a quote etc.

Now I'm having a problem with my sister and her dress. She will not get it hemmed. She said shell just try tall shoes. My sister can't even walk right wearing tennis shoes. I told her I would pay for the alterations and she said she's not hemming it cuz She wants to sell it and get the money even though she didn't pay for it.

I don't want the dress to look dumb and if she wears really tall heels then she's gonna have to get taller heels then mine and she's not gonna be able to walk. The dress is long.

Do you have her dress? Do you know about how long it is? Seriously, I would have it hemmed a little bit so it isn't as extreme as it seems to be. Anyway, who is to say she can't sell it to someone who would need t altered shorter anyway?

She has her dress. And we knew the dresses ran long when we bought them. But for the price we figured we could just hem them.

I have told her that but she doesn't seem to understand that. Shes gonna try it on with heels tonight she said. Hopefully she actually does this time.
