Extra Cake?

Almost Mrs. Marvel, on February 17, 2014 at 3:41 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 32

Ok so we are worried that we are going to end up with WAY more cake then we need, but there really isn't a way to make the cake smaller without losing a whole tier. Cost at this point isn't an option.

For those who are already married... What did you do with extra cake?

I was thinking of getting some bakery boxes and sending it home with the guest? Any thoughts on that idea??

Well, I'm not married yet, but it is pretty unlikely that you'll be able to convince a guest to take the cake. What I would suggest is talking to your baker, and seeing if they can eliminate a tier, but have sheet cake in the back, just in case. Give it to your wedding party or close family after the wedding if you don't want to take it. Personally, I'm looking forward to any left over wedding cake because after dieting this long to get into that dress, I'm gonna want to enjoy some cake Smiley winking

Here it is common for guests to take home extra cake and also for slices to be sent to guests who couldnt make it.

How about taking some into work?

You could ask your baker to make a fake layer if you are afraid you will have too much cake left over it is easy for them to do. I am having a fake cake all but the layer we will cut and the top and then have a sheet cake cut for the guests to eat.

    @RB - you go girl!!!

The cake already is a smaller 3 tier cake and I don't want to make it any smaller. And with the baker we went with the fake tier would cost just about as much as one with cake.

And I have already paid the cake off, Im sure we will take some home but I am worried there will still be more after that to go around... LOL

@P.L. Mary, well, in THAT case, LOL. I just know that wouldn't fly in this area. People would claim to be on sudden "diets." Taking some to work would be acceptable also. It's whatever you want to do with it really.

@Michele, yeah, that's one of the things I'm most looking forward to. Eating my left over wedding cake while scrolling through pictures of my wedding day.. haha!

I agree with Michele...it is not unusual to have fake layers, one real cutting cake, and then sheet cakes for serving. But it is also not unusual to send cake home with guests...they sell boxes for such! You could always arrange donating it to a pantry...they would SO appreciate that! I donate regularly via my employer, to a soup kitchen...and cake would be like the lottery to them!

I asked about the fake layer and it wouldn't cut the cost, so on the safe side since Im paying the same I would rather be on the safe side and have the cake.

Maybe her estimates were off... the cake sizes were the same as everywhere else but her estimates on number of servings seemed really high...

Where I worked in college, we would wrap the extra cake in bakery paper, and set it out on the gift/favor table so as people where leaving, they would grab another. Is this is an option for your venue? Could you ask them to do this?

They actually make special boxes just for weddings so that people can take cake home. It is actually quite common and some people even use the leftover cake as a favor. I suggest you stick with your idea, it is something that most guests are receptive to especially if you aren't having kids at the wedding, you can send the parents home with cake.

It is the cake cutting guide that all follow when they give you estimates on cake etc. I think that you will be just fine and you might be shocked that you won't have cake left over!!! I wouldn't be too concerned about it. You can also try getting cake bags at Orientaltradecompany. and send it home if guests would like to take it with them.

The cake is already ordered and paid for so changing the order in any big way is not going to happen. But the FH and I were discussing what to do with the extra, thats all.

Maybe I'll just get some boxes cheap somewhere and if people take them great if not whatever...

I understand about the fake layer but if I am paying the same cost as a cake, I would rather have the cake and not waste all that money on a piece of decorated foam...

Nevermind just read the above. Well then, have someone take the extra layer to a homeless shelter the next day.

She said it was the cost for decorating... I agree Pezzy!! But overall this lady was WAY cheaper then anywhere else we found! We are getting a wedding cake for 130 and grooms cake for 40-50 and delivery for $475

EDIT: And that is a good $250 less then everywhere else for the same design idea...

In what sad universe is there such thing as "too much cake"? I mean, if it's REALLY a problem for you, send it my way ;-). I think it's a really cute idea to have little boxes (maybe those cute takeout container looking ones) of extra cake and offer it to guests. Would a family member enjoy having the extras?

Not sure about the family, I know my family isn't much on eating sweets (other then me, but really how much cake can we eat)

We also aren't saving the top layer (mostly due to lack of freezer space)

But that is why I was thinking of having it cut up and having it ready to go for guest.

My venue is boxing up the left over cake and giving it to my parents to take home.

I wonder if my caterer would do that if I brought them the boxes.
