entertainment for a non-traditional reception

NLeo, on February 27, 2014 at 1:40 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

FH says we need something to make our reception different/fun. We are having a DW followed by a reception a few weeks later so it will be more casual (attire and setup). We are having a bbq lunch with outdoor activities available if they want to play cornhole, volleyball, horseshoes. But he wants a wow factor. Any ideas? I was going to show him some previous posts about the games (shoe game, etc) but wondered if you had any other ideas. Ive seen the "bridal party olympics" on pinterest but im not sure it will work with a larger group, how many will actually participate, and dealing with setting it all up. What other activities can we plan?

For a BBQ/Picnic style afternoon, I'd suggest: rent a pair of speakers from an audio company and make a playlist, or cultivate one on Pandora.

    Lemonade stand

    sno-cones

    root beer floats

games of all kinds, including kid-centric areas..... slip n' slide or a inflatable rental

sparklers or fireworks (if they're allowed) to end the afternoon

I was looking more for something that the adults could do other than dancing or backyard games. I don't want them to get bored and eat and run. We're not doing garter/bouquet toss or the first dances so I don't feel like there will be much to it.

Rent a bouncy castle!!! I would definitely be wowed if I went to a wedding with a bouncy castle (aka moon bounce). They also make slides, obstacle courses, etc.

It sounds like we are having a pretty similar wedding reception, bbq, beer, and yard games......we will have a DJ but FH and I are not much for dancing. Something else we are adding to the list of stuff to do at our reception is a diy photo area. We got a tropical background poster that is quite large and we are buying hawaiian themed costume pieces for people to wear in pictures. We have a poloroid camara with some film that people can use for thier pic!!!

One more thing, I went to a party once that had a bouncy castle that adults were using and it totally broke the thing. So if you go that route be cafeful or you might end up buying it in the end!!
