Engagement ring size... Better too big or too small?

Brian, on May 17, 2019 at 10:40 AM Posted in Planning 0 29

I'm looking for an engagement ring for my soon-to-be fiance. My question is, if I estimate her ring size, is it better to estimate a little bigger or a little smaller (in terms of the practicality of re-sizing)?

I have secretly tried to match her finger size with my hand, and her ring finger seems to roughly coincide with the size of my pinky. She is tall (about 5'9") and her hands are only slightly smaller than mine.

I wanted to avoid actually measuring her finger as I'd like the proposal to be a bit of a surprise, even though we have talked about our future plans and she is most certainly "all-in".

When I use a ring sizer that you can print out (yes, printed at exactly 100% and double-checked for proper size), size 7 seems rather small when I use it on my pinky. I thought 7 was considered sort of big. I was thinking about getting her a 9 just to be on the safe side, thinking that it's easier to make a ring smaller than it is to make it larger.

Can anyone help to clarify this for me? I know it's easier to just go shopping with her, but we both would rather it be a bit of a surprise. Thanks much!

It is easier to go smaller than larger. However, a size 7 or 8 would be your safest bet. My friend is really tall, and she wears a size 5. I am average height, and I wear a size 7. My fiance got me a size 8.5 engagement ring. I had to resize it. Problem is, he also had the ring engraved, so the jeweler told me I'd either have to lose part of the engraving or the 14k stamp. Of course, I chose the stamp...but still. Side Note: You want the ring to fit snug enough to where her knuckles will block it from coming off, but obviously not too snug to where it cuts off circulation or what not. Anyways, good luck!

It is most definitely easier to get her something a little too big, as it’s cheaper to resize.
There are ring sizers (little clear plastic half tubes) that she can put around the band until it’s resized to fit her finger if it is indeed too large.
I wouldn’t worry about a 7 being too small though, I have a size 4.5 ring finger! I also have small fingers though.

    Congratulations!!

Oh also, if you get it insured, then the resizing will likely be covered by insurance.

My husband bought my ring and used his pinky too as what size he thought my ring finger was! Too funny. I had no idea he was even thinking about rings, and I loved that it was a total surprise. Your future fiance will love it too no doubt!

As PPs have said, better to go bigger than smaller. If 7 fits your pinky but seems a little snug, I'd try an 8 and probably go with that. Stretching out a band that is too small messes with the durability of it and can lead to easy bending or breakage.

Take a string to measure it while shes sleeping. Thats what my fiance did and I had no clue until he told me. Also the say shoe size and ring size are the same... idk about that one. If you have to choose bigger or smaller go bigger. You can get temporary ring sizers until you get it professionally resized

I'm 5'10" and wear a size 5 ring... get the insurance plan because the stock ring was a 7 and they had to custom make a new ring to get it small enough with the settings... and it was covered 100%

Definitely go a little bigger but not 2 sizes bigger. As PP have said its easier to go from big to small than small to big. My engagement ring is slightly big on me but I just wear ring adjusters to make it fit perfect. So she could also do that if the ring ends up being slightly big on her. You can buy adjusters on amazon for around $4.

I'm pretty sure I have heard that a size 7 is "standard". My FH got me a size 7 and it fit almost perfect (a little big). As long as you have the proper coverage on the ring it can get resized ( I have an extended warranty and can get it resized, bigger or smaller as many times as I want, forever). I would prefer bigger then smaller because if it is too small she cannot wear it/ you wont be able to get it on her finger. Walmart sells little adjusters for rings they are called ring snuggies. I would suggest buying a little bigger and buying a set of those so she can at least wear the ring to show it off without worrying about it falling off, until she can get it sized.

I'd also throw in that you might try to get her friends/family to help. Even if she doesn't regularly wear rings (which would definitely help you with sizing guesses) her mom/friends may know what size she wears. My mom probably knew/could have guessed, but even if she hadn't been right on, she would have known that her rings are too big for me, which could help narrow things down.

I'd say go bigger than smaller. Definitely confirm with a jeweler that the specific ring you purchase can be resized. I'm just under 5'2" and my ring is a size 5. A size 7 ring isn't that big! Congratulations!

It depends on the style of the ring. If it only needs to be changed a half size, it doesn't really matter, but I've been told by multiple jewelers that it's easier to make a ring bigger than to make it smaller. Which I realize is the opposite of what everyone else is saying. The other half of it, though, is that it's psychologically better to receive a ring that's a little bigger, rather than smaller. I agree, if she has any ring she wears at all, see if you (or a friend) can sneak it off to check the size. Or just get the 7.

Most jewelers can also do half and quarter sizes and they can make a big difference (my ring is 6 and three quarters).

If you're worried about the 7 being too small and want to go a little bigger just to be safe, see if you can do a 7.5. And then resize as needed Smiley smile

A little helpful hint with this is ring sizes often match your shoe size, for instance I wear a size 5 in shoe and my ring finger is also a size 5

Easier to get a bigger ring and size it down.
Does she have any rings? I would take one that you know she wears and take it to a jeweler to get her size.

It’s definitely easier to go with something a little bigger. If this helps my ring is a 9, if your fiancé doesn’t have sausage fingers like mine id go with a 7 or 8! Haha

I see a lot of girls posting that its better to go bigger than too small, but i do think it depends on the ring your getting. If you're going for a simple band (no diamonds or stones on the band except for the center stone) defiantly go bigger than smaller. BUT if yore looking at rings with a diamond paved band (the stones go almost all the way around the band) its better to be too small. Reason being - this is the type of ring my fiance gave me (paved Band) and he bought it too big, I had to talk to SIX jewelers before i found someone who was willing to size it down for me, each one told me that it would be easier to make this particular band bigger rather than smaller due to diamonds being loosened or what not.

Bottom line - Get a ring that you are sure you can take back and get a different size if needed, that way you wont have to worry about it.

    Congrats!

    1) Does she wear rings? If so, you can take one to the jewelers to get sized?

    2) Or you can propose with a temp ring (cute, fun, a piece of twine, etc) to surprise her then go together to pick out what she wants.

Better to be a little too big, in my opinion. Easy enough to size down on a resize or add a sizing bead. But the real advantage is, then she can actually put it on! You can also get temporary plastic adjusters from Amazon that you can put on to make it more snug before you change it, which is nice if it’s a close fit, and she wants to wait a bit to see how her fingers work— getting a ring was a crazy learning experience for me to see how much my fingers swell/shrink in certain situations !

Have you considered using a prop ring to propose and then taking her ring shopping later on? This is what my fiancé did as he had no clue what my size is nor my preferred style. I’m really glad he chose to do it this way but I understand that some like to have their ring immediately.
