Engagement Ring Shopping! Alone? Together? Informed?

Lynnie, on October 7, 2015 at 9:21 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 59

Oh, the engagement ring Smiley smile It's going to be on your finger for the rest of your life, so you want to make sure that you love it. This can obviously make it very stressful on your SO, especially because engagement rings are expensive!

So how did you or your FH/FW pick the ring out?

-Did they do it all by themselves?

-Did the two of you go ring shopping together?

-Did he ask a family member or best friend of yours what you would like?

-Did you give them hints?

We picked it together! It was really fun. By the time he actually proposed I had forgotten exactly what it looked like so it was still a surprise!

I was aware that FH may have been thinking about it... So I started talking to my eldest daughter (19) about it. Mentioned what I like, what size I was. I told FH that I didn't like diamonds, that I wanted tanzanite. He took it from there, collaborated with the 19 yr old, and had the younger two (12 and 10) in on the secret.

We went to a bunch of stores together so he knew what I liked. He then picked out the actual ring by himself and did a fantastic job. (:

I spent years telling him what I wanted and sending pictures to help him (we had known for a long time that we would be getting married). He claims I tend to want to micromanage haha. In the end he picked it out himself and ended up choosing my favourite. I highly suspected he had it, but it was still a surprise especially since I didn't know which ring.

We went a couple of times and I tried on a couple I liked, but he took my sister with him when he made the final purchased.

FH went himself, but I sent him plenty of pictures beforehand of what I liked!

FH asked his brothers wife at the time (ex wife now), to try to find out what I like. So she just asked me one day at dinner. I love the Tiffany Harmony ring and showed that to her. FH took that design style and changed it up a tad, took it to a family friend who is a jeweler.

He sent me a bunch of links to rings to gauge my reactions and give him feedback. He also consulted with my sister and my friend. When he sent me the ring he ended up getting me, I knew it was perfect except the center stone was tanzanite. When he proposed, it was dark so I couldn't see the ring. It was the ring I loved but he replaced the tanzanite with a sapphire.

He went totally on his own. No help and no hints from me. It was a total surprise. I picked my band out myself though and got something on the flashier side, so I don't wear my e-ring with it.

He did it by himself and designed something better than I could have done myself! He knew I didn't want a diamond, but that's all we talked about Smiley smile

He had me go with my best friend and we just kind of looked at general styles that I like. Overall, he picked it out and I love it! I never would have even considered an oval diamond. And now, I can't imagine having anything else!

FH and I have been together 7 years and were talking LOTS about marriage and timeline and saving for a ring, so FH asked me for an email detailing out exactly what I wanted. I was SO good and used all the correct terms, spelled things out for him (tried to explain cut, clarity, etc) and attached pictures.....and he still felt too nervous to pick it out by himself hahah. So we went together and looked at rings. I loved it because I actually changed my mind when trying on different cuts. He still didn't propose for several months after, so I didn't feel like it ruined the proposal surprise!

He picked it out himself, but knew that I wanted a sapphire. We also discussed vintage vs. new, but having a sapphire was really my only "request."

He picked it out on his own, but he did ask for my input on the cut.

We went together. We talked about what he was thinking of buying and what I liked before, and we were totally different. Then when we decided to use my grandmother's diamond he sort of handed over ownership of the process to me and asked me to pick a setting for it. I was slightly let down that it wasn't a romantic process, but he just reiterated that he didn't want to invest in jewelry that I wouldn't love.

We went window shopping one day to gauge what I liked. Then he took his Mom to the jewelers and designed what I'd like.

We went to a shop to get sized (because I had no clue what size my finger was) and we looked around for a minute. I let him know that I didn't like yellow gold or anything too traditional. He picked out a rose gold ring with champagne diamonds and I absolutely love it.

FW and I went into a jewellery store once together and looked at a ton of engagement rings - just to give her an idea of what I liked and what I didn't. I tried a bunch on and found a design I really liked. This was more then a year before FW ended up purposing, and I was not with her when she eventually purchased a ring (she did not buy the exact one that I tried on that day but one very much like it) so there was still an element of surprise.
