Engagement Ring & Hand Sanitizer

Amanda, on May 22, 2016 at 8:50 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

I'm a nurse and just got engaged. I don't want to take my ring off but when I have to use hand sanitizer all the time is that bad for my ring??

Can you just rub it near your ring but not on it? That's what I do

Purell is mostly alcohol-- no reason it should harm your ring.

I'm a teacher so I use it a lot too. I take my ring off every time I use it. I can't imagine hand sanitizer being good for your ring.

I don't take my ring off when I use the sanitizer at my hospital. It hasn't dulled it or messed anything up but I've only had my ring for six months. I'm not sure how it'll hold up over time.

Don't wear your real ring at work. Get a fake ring or plain inexpensive band. It won't retain germs as well and you can wear gloves more easily. I've also seen silicone wedding bands for nurses/police etc.

let's be honest, you really don't want nasty hospital germs all up in your ring! And if you are avoiding it with sanitizer, EW. You're spreading germs to your other patients and yourself. This exact reason is why you can't wear rings in the NICU

I'm also a nurse. I have had a right hand ruby ring for over 20 years and my ering for over a year. I wear them both to work and use hand sanitizer frequently. I have not seen any problems with either of them.

Please sanitize your entire hand. Skipping a spot is like not washing your hands after using the bathroom. Just gross. Edit: MrOKD, the chemist, said that over time the chemicals from the hand sanitizer will affect your ring. He said you should wear it with pride, but not in the workplace.

I'm a NICU nurse, so I can't wear my ring anyway. But as much as you want to keep your ring on, please take it off. There is no reason to spread even more germs among your patients than you already do without a germ bearing piece of jewelry. Wear it on a chain around your neck if you must have it on you.

My friend who is a nurse does not wear her e-ring at work. She has a plain gold wedding band that she wears at work, but that's it.

Just imagine all the decal matter, blood, etc you're going to get up in the crevices. Ew. Ew. Ew

I agree with the wearing it on a chain! No need to spread germs or get that film of hand sanitizer all over it. Lots of people just leave theirs at home but having my e-ring on me makes me happy.

I don't wear mine when teaching because I don't want the germs on my ring and I wash my hands, sanitize a lot and do projects.

I was actually told by Zales that hand sanitizer is one thing that can loosen my stone from it's prongs.

Went looking for some evidence of what I was told by the manager at the jewelry store and found this:

"Hand sanitizer has also been found to be very hard on white gold jewelry. It will wear the Rhodium off of your jewelry more quickly."

    And this was very interesting:

"a notice was posted instructing the staff to be sure to give the alcohol time to dry from your hands before doing something like walking down a carpeted corridor and touching a doorknob.

Because static electricity can cause a spark which can ignite the alcohol.

Which can cause you to suddenly find you have your hand on fire"

    And one more:

"I am a NICU nurse and I was told in my orientation that repeated exposure to antibacterial soaps and gels can badly effect diamonds and metals over time. However, since we are not allowed to wear any rings with stones due to infection risk, I am not sure if this was a scare tactic or the truth. The story I heard from one of the educators is that one of her friends who was a nurse took her rings in to be cleaned and the jeweller asked if she was a nurse as soon as he saw the rings. He was able to tell, apparently, due to the damage her stones had sustained from repeated exposure to the gels."

I'm a flight attendant and I use hand sanitizer all the time inflight. Not sure how it works with my engagement ring yet as I just got it today. But I've been wearing a gold ring my mother gave me for my 21st birthday and it doesn't hurt it at all.

My sister was a bedside nurse and is now a nurse practitioner. She has been wearing her ring to work since the day she got it back from being sized in 2009. It's a solitaire in a platinum setting.
