Engagement Ring Falling off!

Stacey, on January 8, 2014 at 10:56 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

Hello!

I am wondering if there are any Toronto/GTA area brides that can recommend a jeweller that will resize my engagement ring smaller within a day??? My fiance had my ring made by a private jeweller, although the ring is GORGEOUS - they have been terrible with our follow up and we have been trying to get the ring resized since mid December and they always seem busy, forget to call us back, etc..

We are leaving this Friday on vacation and I just don't want to risk losing it.. The ring is probably two sizes too large, it actually falls off my finger when I shake my hand a little upside down.

Any recommendations for some great jewellers that would be able to help us out??

Thanks so much!!

I don't think you can get a ring properly resized within a day. Why don't you buy an inexpensive ring guard for your vacation? When you come home, you can research trustworthy jewelers in your area.

I doubt you can get it resized that quick. Put tape on it (not cute, but better than falling off).

My resizing through Kay took about 3 weeks.

I would suggest the ring guard until you return from vacation.

I will definitely have to wear a ring gaurd if I cannot get it re-sized. I just wondered if there was a jeweller (wholesaler) that I could bring it to? Our jeweller said (when he actually takes it) he could have it back to us within 1 day. He just has to bring it downtown to his jeweller and he can re-size it that same day and have it back to me.

I know most jewellery stores (People's, etc) need a few days to a week because they are sending it elsewhere- but from the sounds of it going to an actual wholesaler they have all the tools on site, they can do it that day?

Call around to some individual jewelers. NO chains. (I.E. Kays, Ostermans, Helzberg Diamonds, etc.) My ring was resized while I waited at our local shop where FH purchased my ring. Took all of 10 minutes. There is absolutely no need for a real jewelry store to have to send your ring out.

ETA: I used to work at Osterman's (Kay's sister company) and saw some pretty shady shit happen to peoples jewelry that was sent out for resizing, soldering, replacement stones, etc.

Depending on where you're going on vacation, I'd consider leaving your engagement ring at home and picking up a fake from target or anywhere and just wearing that so that it fits and won't fall off and you know your ring is safe at home. And then when you get back get the resized.

I know its not what your looking for, but Jareds resized my ring within 24 hours. I dropped it off at 6pm and had it back at noon the next day since they have people on the premise.

I do think a ring guard may be your best option though.

I will see if I can call around for some non-chain jewellers in the Toronto area. LillyBride, that is an option also. I also heard of a ring spacer type thing you can pick up at a jewellery store and it sits inside your ring and closes the space off and makes it tighter temporarily..

@Truffle- Where is Jared's? I could drop it off today and give them 24 hours, that would work!

I think Jared's is a US company... I know Spence Diamonds does resizing, I just don't know about the 24 hour thing...

Definitely call a couple different places and find out if they will do it, and don't forget to mention you haven't bought it from them.

In the meantime, I would buy the spacer or not wear your ring at all.

    Good luck!

Robbins Brothers did mine in a day. I know it's a chain but I'm not sure if there are any locations near you. Good luck...mine was about 2 sizes too larger too!

Jared the galleria of Jewelry.... is the entire name. They are a franchise jewelry store that sells engagement and wedding rings.

Soon2be Mrs K makes a point that they may not be in Canada, I thought they might have places there as well but they could be US only. It definitely doesnt hurt to check though.

I suggest a ring guard or a dummy ring.

Jared is a completely US chain. They do not have any stores in Canada, so I wouldn't waste my time looking for one.

Sorry no help on the stores in the GTA. I live in Alberta.

Quick Google search turned up Strada Jeweler in Toronto, who does ring resizing while you wait (and watch, apparently)

I would call around to different smaller jewelry stores that are local that do their own benchwork and see if they can do it the same day. Some rings are easier to resize than others (design, stones, size of the shank, etc...)

If not, see if you can pick up a cheap band that will be snug and put your engagement ring closer to the knuckle. The tighter band will keep it from falling off until you are able to get it resized.

If you cant do resizing right now, theres a thing that they can put on the inside of your ring to make it smaller, i think it's called a ring adjuster. Most jewerly places have them if you need your ring right away and its a great temp fix. Heres what it looks like. I think you might be able to get this at Walmart in the jewerly section as well but I can't remember.
