Engagement party hostess gift ideas

R, on January 25, 2018 at 9:23 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7
Two of my aunts and a family friend are hosting an engagement party for us, and I am struggling to think of thank you gifts.
All three women are comfortably well off, so things like jewelry or a vase or whatever don't make sense because they could (and do) honestly buy a better one themselves.
This is why Im wracking my brain for something super thoughtful that they wouldn't buy for themselves. My mom suggested super fancy olive oil, or an actual truffle - they all love to cook, so something that's top shelf to cook with but 150 dollars or less could be cool!
I'm also thinking 1) something to do with photos of their families 2) something techy they wouldnt know about (they're all over 65)
Any fun ideas you can give me would be great!!

I think nice stationery or notecards are always appreciated. Williams-Sonoma sells cute sets like cocktail mixers, popcorn seasoning, etc which would be along the lines of Olive oil etc.

I'd skip the family photos (they probably have plenty) and the tech idea they don't know about. If they wanted the tech gadget, they'd have it.

I'd go with something along the line of what your mom suggested. Is there a gourmet oil store near you that carries different flavors of olive oil and vinegar? If so, you could get each a few bottles of different flavors, arrange them in a basket, add a dipping plate, a jar of pesto, etc. If there isn't a store near you, look online for quality oils.

I dont know about all old people, but the ones I know LOVE to write letters. Stationery sounds like a great idea.

I think they will appreciate whatever you decide to do.

We took a really cute photo of me, FH, dad, and stepmom (they hosted the party) on their back porch which overlooks a ton of trees which were beautiful in June. I printed it and got a frame and mailed that to them with a nice thank you note. And some chocolate we picked up in Belgium that we forgot to bring to them. My parents are really bad about printing photos and getting new ones around the house.

I like the idea of nice olive oils. Just because they're well off doesn't mean they won't appreciate whatever you give them. If they all like to cook, maybe something cooking related from a store like Anthropologie? Something cute to be displayed that you wouldn't buy for yourself. Maybe a pretty piece of serveware - https://www.anthropologie.com/kitchen-serveware

If you have a Sur La Table by you they have fantastic gift stuff. Olive Oils, tools, fun cookie cutters, really beautiful serving bowls, seasonal stuff. I would check there. I gave my grandma recently a cute monogrammed (single letter) wooden spoon and pasta serving bowl, with a fresh olive oil. She loved it. Just get a gift receipt just in case
