Engagement disaster?!

FutureDMK, on July 7, 2016 at 8:48 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 57

We've heard engagement stories and I'm sure as females (and the few males that are here) we've dreamt about how our SO would propose and our wedding day. Everyone always wants the fairytale (wether big or small). We've seen some wedding disaster stories. But did anyone have a disastrous engagement? Did you see it as a sign?!

    Let me fill you in...

When FH proposed, albeit it was a surprise and the proposal itself was super cute. I put the ring on it was fine a little tight but I was able to get it on and off. When I get hot I swell really bad (I used too). I took a shower and after my shower my finger just swelled so badly. I tried everything to get the ring off (ice, soap, oil, butter, windex, etc). We had planned on going to dinner, the his sisters (they had a cake for us) then to my parents. Well I ended up in the ER because my finger was so swollen I lost all sensation. In the ER they tried to wrap the string around it and get it off that way (they've had many success stories). Nope not me. They had to cut my ring off!!!! The dr cut it, which made it tighter on my finger, when he tried to get it off, it cracked in half. I was so upset. After we left I had my parents meet us at his sisters and we still celebrated but FH and I were so Upset that the night was kind of ruin. We started fighting and really fought all week. I got my ring back a week later (the jeweler did an amazing job and you can't tell that it was in pieces). The whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth. We're ok now and in full wedding mode but I'm curious on everyone else's thoughts. Would you take is as a sign?!

FH had the ring for almost 3 months before he proposed (and I knew he had a ring because we went ring shopping together). SO he had months to come up with a plan and knows how much of a sucker I am for a good proposal. Instead, he came up with a plan last minute the week of NYE and screwed up in asking people if they could be there because he said New Year's Day to a lot of people, including my mom when he asked if he could get her and my dad in the same room for it (they're divorced). So he ended up proposing at my dad's house, totally randomly, with just my dad, step mom, and best friend there. When my mom found out that was how he did it she got pissed, ruined our engagement night because I cried half the night, and the two of them didn't talk for about 4 months. It's all better now, but man was it depressing for a while!

    Yikes.

I'd take it as a sign that I'd need to tell my husband what my ring size was so that it wouldn't happen again with the band.

I don't want to call my proposal a "disaster," but it wasn't a fairy tale either.

(Start by saying the proposal was a total surprise.) Day before my birthday, I treated myself to a massage then FH was going to take me to Dave and Busters. I got home from the massage and started to get ready to go out. FH was pushing me to open the birthday gifts he got me. I became irritated and snipped at him a few times.

Eventually I agreed to open the gifts. I had just washed my face and had my hair pulled back in my nasty makeup headband. FH told me to open the card first. In it, he wrote a sweet note and said "Look in each gift you open."

As I opened the gifts (a DVD, a box of chocolates, and a reusable plastic cup), I got more annoyed because I just wanted to go out and celebrate my birthday! The ring was inside the reusable cup. After I took it out, FH got down on one knee, said some sweet things (I honestly can't remember what because I was crying too hard), and put the ring on my finger.

We called our families and went out for my birthday. I couldn't have asked for more.

Things happen, unfortunately. I wouldn't take it as anything more than a freak accident.

Oiy. Mine was a hot mess.

June he took me to a nice Mexican restaurant (we love Mexican)- We were planning to go to DC that September and do this PopWed buisness. (quick- easy and done) and I couldn't get him to comitt to the deposit. Turns out he had already spoken with my parents and unbeknownst to me he was waiting to propose before we discussed the pop wed business. Since I only see him once a week I was pushing hard for him to give me an answer.

Turns out he had talked to my family- and my dad couldn't make it. I fucking flipped my shit- angry tears of hate over my fajitas and margarita over how selfish my dad is.

He semi talked me off the ledge and took me for a walk this adorable marina under the TapenZee bridge. We walked around for 2 hrs waiting for the full moon to come that never came out.

I had had 2 drinks and 2 hrs of walking I needed to pee- and I realized we were waiting for the moon and by 9:30 I was like do you give up he said yeah. And I turned to leave and he grabbed and said wait.

Got down on one knee- said something about loving me- and how he didn't always promise to love me but to bring me tacos and touch my butt (seriously- he said that)- and I cried- and he put the ring on my finger.

In the dark. I couldn't see it.

As we walked back to the flourescent light on the walk way I said- "did I see a Marquis cut?"

he'd bought me the most plain garnet marquis ring.

My stomach literally sank. It looked like a high school debutante promise ring.

He asked me something and I looked up at him and said "it's lovely"

And he said "We'll take it back tomorrow"

Anyway- we returned what we now affectionately call my vagina ring and ordered a new beautiful black diamond we picked together.

We opted to not tell anyone and just do a "do over" especially since I was mad at my family for ruining my proposal and my wedding.

July 1st- I took him on a surprise trip to Niagra Falls and proposed- one knee and all. It was awesome.

July 3rd we went horse back riding (a total surprise for me) and he proposed again half way through with the new ring.

It was to big- we sent it back for a new ring.

When it came back- he re proposed in the kitchen (one knee again) with the new ring- and I still cried LOL.

We wound up not telling anyone because 1. I was still pissed at my family and 2.) HIS sister's fiance was in the hospital. And shortly after the first proposal- passed away. They were planning to get married in that September as well.

So- we wound up not telling anyone till the end of August- it was a fucking hot mess.

    Another story:

A guy I dated a while ago had his brother get married during our relationship. The brother proposed to his wife in a Starbucks parking lot. It was planned (not spur-of-the-moment). And he did NOT put his coffee cup down to do it...

FutureDMK- the only sign I would take from this is how you both handled it. If things are good now and you truly love him then you're on the way to happily ever after. Remember marriage is going to be a lot harder than the few months or years you are planning your wedding. You don't quit being married you fight, say sorry, and love on.

Totally NOT a disaster, but FH remains annoyed that he was knocked over, while down on one knee, by our overly exuberant Labrador.

Our proposal was very us.... My brothers on the other hand proposed to quiet a controlling woman who basically changes his being and it was a mess. So unfortunately my brother tried copying my proposal (we are very outdoorsy and future husband took me to their family farm where we had our first kiss, first date, first said I love you and proposed to me in the middle of a wild flower field and got it all caught on one of our deer cams then we went to my favorite restaurant with our families and our favorite bar with our family and friends like a surprise engagement party) anyway my brother tried taking his Fiancé to a random corn field by where they live but he couldn't use a deer cam because it wasn't his property so he wanted to propose in front of his computer (lol) but the computer died (LOL) and she was like "what are you doing. This is stupid" so they had to go back to her moms house where they live and he plugged his computer in and was so frustrated because she was being a snot and complaining and he finally just said will you marry me.

They talk about it a couple weeks later now and she says "it was very us because I'm controlling and he's unorganized" like oh that's nice!

There was talk of my DH's niece getting engaged, her then bf (now FH) was having her ring made & planned a beautiful surprise proposal for her. My DH was ring shopping with his Mother & found the one he wanted, ordered it & when it came in his Mother went to pick it up for him & she didn't like it. So she called him & told him no, no, no I don't like it & it looks funny, but I found something I like better. My engagement ring is past, present & future princess cut diamonds with smaller princess cut diamonds surrounding, but the other one was a princess cut solitaire with round diamonds surrounding. From what I've been told it just didn't look right. So he told his Mother to go ahead & get the other one (my ring). He then called his niece's FH & asked him when he was planning because he didn't want to steal her limelight. The niece's FH didn't want to tell anyone so DH told him look I'm doing this but I don't want to upset my niece. So he told him when & then the next weekend we went to DH's sister's to celebrate their engagement. I knew something was up with DH, just wasn't sure what. So after the party we went to our favorite little café even though we were both full from the party earlier he insisted we go. Then we took a walk on the levee near the river, to our spot! We sat down & he proposed. He didn't get down on one knee because he said he was afraid he wouldn't get up (we are a little older). My response was priceless, I asked him if he was sure (he always said he'd never get married again). Back up a little, just as he proposed, there was a couple riding bikes & the woman saw the whole proposal, she yelled out "Did he go to Jared's?" I laughed & said I don't know! He went!!! OMG he went!!! The rest is history! So not terribly romantic like in the fairytales, but it was totally us & very sentimental to be in our special spot on the river. We still laugh about it but I can't say it was a disaster.

My proposal was absolutely amazing but about two hours after celebrating with family and friends I came down with a horrendous stomach bug. Spent the entire night in the bathroom and even slept in there using towels as blankets. I am sure you can imagine....

It wasnt the worse but it definitely wasnt what either of us imagined. He bought the ring right before we went on a cruise with my family (I had no idea). And on the way to the port I was PMSing and really pissed about our roommate and living situation. So we fought the WHOLE time at the cruise and he ditched the idea of proposing. Two weeks after we got back I was having a terrible 3 days at work (I worked for a lady who has 3 girls, 6months 1.5 yrs and 3yrs, and her mother-in law who helped me during nap time was very sick, plus the 1.5 had a terrible ear infection and cried 90% of the time I was with her.) He decides to pack a very nice and thoughtful picnic for us to go on a hike. I was hot, tired, smelled like breastmilk, mashed banana and sweat. I wanted to explode but I held myself together. We eat our picnic and he started taking pictures, he got one knee took a terrible picture up my nose set down the camera and almost dropped the ring in the creek. I was excited and relived ( I was starting to get concerned that he was never going to ask)But I still couldnt stop thinking about how terrible all the pictures would be and how much I wished he would have just let me take a nap...... Smiley tongue

My FH invited a bunch of Friends to the family cottage, and there was a music festival that weekend, so only one friend showed up. So she third wheeled the engagement and took an awkward photo.

One year later, we are not even friends any more.

    It is what it is.

ETA: my dad threw a ring in my mom's nursing school backpack, and she found it in class and was like "well, I guess I'm getting married!"

We had a small bbq at our home with our mom's and the kids, I had bought a cake...a white one! Just on a fluke! It was on sale, my FH kept asking me if I was done with dinner, I thought that was weird. So I got the cake out and as I did he said he had a question for me. With the cake still in my hands he got down on one knee in our kitchen and asked , but I was so shocked I couldn't say anything! So he asked again and of course I said yes!!

My hubby was so nervous we literally walked the entire 1.5 mile trail before he could ask ( I had a feeling he was going to bc he was acting strange!!) And then when we got to the last overlook on the water he literally spit like 3 times and I thought he was going to throw up! Lol! He picked one of my favorite spots though amd got down on one knee. He was just a nervous wreck, but it all worked out!! It was not a disaster by any means, but we literally laugh about it and probably will for years!

E-Tex that's the thing he did have my size. He brought another ring of mine to the jeweler that fit me perfectly. It had to do with the band. We got my ring resized...FF to present day. I no longer swell and I'm Laing weight. My ring is getting bigger and we don't want to resize it again. It's all good. Regardless of the "disaster," unfortunately it was us. I'm the epitome of Murphy's Law. I laugh about it now. My ring is beautiful and I'm marrying my best friend. That's what matters.

It totally was not a disaster it was super sweet and I LOVED IT but...

When FH husband proposed I was wearing riding boots, basketball shorts, a t-shirt, no bra, no makeup, hair not done, and I didn't even shower that day.

I love it though because I was looking like a hot mess and he thought I was still beautiful and proposed with me like that hahah.
