Engaged Couples Conference

Eden, on May 23, 2010 at 12:22 PM Posted in Planning 0 7

My pre-Cana is today! I'm a little nervous and not sure what to expect. The priest we are working with isn't fond of me because I'm not Catholic or baptized. He has beenrather rude. Thankfully he isn't marrying us!

Has anyone done a couples conference before? I want to know what happens at these.

Thanks and wish me luck!!

Good luck! We're supposed to do it, we're trying to find a way to weasel out of it! I'm in the same position, not Catholic, and the priest keeps trying to convert me. He should really just thank me for agreeing to go thru all the stuff I totally disagree with!

I haven't done one, but I'm nervous about it as well. I am finalizing my decision between two venues soon, and one would be a church wedding and one wouldn't. Good luck!

We went through this yesterday. Ours really wasn't that bad...there are some "worksheets" for you to fill out and discuss with your FH (not the group, don't worry), and some "inspirational" talks about being married and such. The one thing I didn't like was the family planning bit...I'd've been more receptive to something talking about raising kids, but that's just me. Mostly it's just people who've been married for a long long time (one couple was celebrating 39 years yesterday) talking to you about the reality of being married (and it's not all bad). Overall, it was a long day but it wasn't awful. They even taught us a few basic ballroom dancing steps at the end! :-) It wasn't nearly as preachy as I was dreading...for reference, we were in Nashua, NH...not the most liberal, but not exactly conservative either.

You'll be ok...it's not as bad as it sounds, it's just long. Take it as a chance to bond with your man.

We went yesterday! It was actually not as bad as we thought it was going to be. We listened to a lot of couples and they were way more honest, realistic, and down to earth than the crazies that we have teaching our natural family planning class and even the priest who of course wants us to uphold the highest morals possible. It was very refreshing to hear someone more on our level speak.

Well you all were right. It wasn't that bad at all. Even got out an hour early! I took away some information and though my FH and I have pretty much discussed everything they brought up (which suprises people cause we are so young) there were a couple things we want to discuss more after hearing the stories. All in all it was fun and I met a really nice couple there who was in our group!

We ended up not getting married in a Catholic church for some of those reasons, amongst others. We have been going to premarital counseling at a different church, though and it has been okay thus far. Not too much Bible talk, but more about us.
