My wedding is a few days before Christmas, and knowing that's a desirable vacation time, I put in for time off in January this year. It was approved in January.

A big project was recently sprung on us and it's in my area of expertise. There are big milestones that have been set for the project by my boss' boss, most of which are during my time off. I'm starting to see the writing on the wall that my vacation time (including the day after my wedding) will be revoked and I'll be not only expected to work, but long days, evenings, and weekends too.

How do I approach my employer to prevent this? Because this is at the end of the year, not only am I not getting the days I've scheduled, but I'm totally losing the vacation time as of 1/1. Help!!!

For full disclosure, I'm in New York, salaried, and have been with my company for 3 years. I've only had 3 days off this year so far (including 1 sick day)

Welcome to adulthood....normally I get off the week between Christmas and New Years, returning to work the Monday after NYE. Thats not happening this year because work is so busy. And the ski trip that was planned for the weekend after christmas for FH's birthday? Shortened to a weekend trip rather than 4 days. Sure its a bummer but oh well.

You just inquired about this turn of events yesterday...give it a day or two more and if you don't hear anything start pestering.

I'm sorry, Spara. I really hope that your employer can make an exception in your case and allow you to have the time for your beautiful wedding. Good luck.

I think you should prioritize the time you want off. For example, the day after you wedding so you can party into the night if you want.

I think it's reasonable to say "OK, I can delay my mini-moon until February, but I really want Monday off after my wedding day. Giving a little might get you a little.

Also pretty poor project/resource management to not take your availability into account in scheduling.

    Good luck!

That's absolutely ridiculous. I'm not sure how much money is directly linked to your days off, but I would definitely be asking for compensation for anything that was planned after your days were approved. For me, I have numerous people who will be flying and paying for lodging for 3-5 days prior to our wedding, all based on my availability (I took off the Tuesday before to the Tuesday after) . I would be absolutely livid if my employer moved a project up because I was getting ahead on it.
