East Bay - rain in the forecast on wedding day :(

Megan, on September 15, 2021 at 12:46 PM Posted in California Planning 0 8

Hi Everyone!

Not really a question, just needed a space to vent! For weeks it's been nothing but sun in the forecast, now 4 days before our wedding on Sunday a 40% chance of rain comes in the forecast. We're having a morning wedding in Berkeley and our venue is indoor/outdoor, so on the plus side there are definitely options for moving everything indoors. But I am absolutely gutted because we made plans for our first look/wedding party photos before the ceremony to be completely outdoors in a sequoia grove, and we had lawn games instead of dancing for the reception since it would be in the afternoon.

My fingers are crossed that the forecast clears up, and on the bright side it currently says it should clear up just before our ceremony time, but I just can't help but be frustrated. We went through postponing because of COVID, panicked when Delta surfaced a month before our new date, the workers at our venue almost went on strike 2 weeks before, next there were red flag fire warnings in the area just last week, and when the red flag warning went away, here comes this forecast. It just feels like I'm not allowed to let go of stressing, there's always something popping up.

Anyways, just needed to get all this out somewhere, I hope all you other CA brides are faring well and if you have a million frustrations, I'm here with ya!

Oh honey. I'm sorry. I hope it does clear up for you and you have the most beautiful wedding day.

What I will say though, is that overcast days are supposed to be much easier/better to photograph due to the diffused light. Also, it's supposed to be good luck if it rains on your day - there's that old phrase about a knot tied in the rain being stronger than one tied in the dry.

And finally, you can get some really romantic and dramatic shots in poor weather!

    here are some inspiration pics:

Thank you, these words and photos are comforting! We definitely panic-ordered some clear umbrellas, lol, so at least we’ll be ready to use those! Keeping all our fingers and toes crossed for sun, but I think we’ve reached all to all the people we can to help make sure our day still goes smoothly!

Oh man, I'm so sorry Megan!! ❤️ Has the forecast changed at all since yesterday?

The clear umbrellas are a great call though - they make for fantastic pictures!! 📷

Thank you so much! ❤️ And the forecast sadly increased the chance of rain, it’s been fluctuating between 50-60% now. Anything I’m reading seems to indicate it would light showers that should subside by 10AM, so that’s kind of a plus, but it’s also tricky because our ceremony is at 11AM with our photos planned for 9:30-10:30, lol. So it’s almost a gamble either way - plan for rain/move everything instead for it to end up going away, or stick to our original plan and get everything wet. I think the safer choice is to move everything inside if it looks like heavier rain the morning of, and we’re slowly coming around to accepting that that may happen. Still hoping and praying it looks clear once Sunday rolls around!!

So rain was forecast for both our wedding days (eloped on original day due to Covid, had a wedding celebration roughly a year later) and we had great weather both days. I also work in a profession where we do outdoor events and pay attention to weather all the time and it often does not play out as predicted. So try not to stress and know you'll make the most of whatever weather you get and your day will be beautiful regardless!

Thanks so much, and I'm happy to hear both of your days worked out beautifully! And knock on wood, our forecast finally seems to have cleared up as well, we are so relieved! It crept up all the way to 60% chance of rain then out of nowhere it snapped back to sunshine. That first day definitely had us wound up but I think should the forecast change again we have a plan in place and you're absolutely right, we'll make the most of it and still be married at the end of day Smiley laugh

I'm stressing out about this myself. We postponed due to the pandemic and now we're a little more than a week out and the forecast calls for rain in the afternoon. Our ceremony is initially indoors anyway because at 5p, it's cutting it close to sundown. All we need is a couple hours for pictures before hand, so I'm praying to someone that it'll clear up for the little time I'm hoping for

So sorry to hear you're going through this as well! Hopefully since you're still more than a week out the forecast will clear up a your date gets closer, a lot can change in that time! I think the forecast about 3 days out is typically what the day ends up being; the forecast for ours cleared up 2 or 3 days before.

Also happy to hear you have an indoor space available! I know I was super grateful for that for our wedding as well. If it helps, what relieved my stress was touching base with vendors and seeing if they had any recommendations. Do you have a planner or day-of coordinator? We had a day-of coordinator and she was a great resource for a rain plan B. Our photographer also recommended clear umbrellas for any outdoor photos, and our rental company made us a floor plan to show alternative places inside we could place any pieces we originally planned for outside.

While hopefully you don't need to use it, I know it eased my nerves a bit knowing we had a plan ahead of time rather than scrambling the day of. Sending lots of good vibes your way and wishing you a beautiful wedding day!
