Early Afternoon Ceremony / Evening Reception? During covid in Dc?

Jamie, on June 25, 2020 at 3:31 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 10

Hi everyone,

I'm scrambling to downsize and change the plans of my wedding scheduled for 9/12/20 due to COVID-19 and living in a densely populated urban area. Most guests will be flying in for the event, even though we're reducing to only wedding party + close family members. On the hunt for a more appropriate venue for that size, I found my dream small wedding ceremony venue, but it's only available for a 1:30 ceremony. I really would like to have an evening reception at a friend's backyard with twinkle lights (I'm already compromising on so much!), but I'm not sure if that's too long of a gap between events.

Because it's DC, there is plenty to do in between, plus most guests will know each other and we can likely mingle in the reception space before it officially starts. Any suggestions on making this work? What could people do in between during COVID? Or do you think everyone can just mingle in the backyard for a few hours and we can start dinner and dancing around 5:30?

I’ve been to weddings with gaps where people just go home or do their own thing after. It’s kind of annoying to have a gap but sometimes you can’t help it logistically. You can give some recommendations on things to do for people who are traveling.

I think that would be fine. I agree with PP let people know what they can go so for a while.

Agreed. I lived in that area for about 4 years, so, depending on exactly where you're located, traffic alone to get from point A to point B might eat up a decent chunk of time. You can offer a cocktail hour starting at 4:30, and expect some people to show up at 4...that said, assuming the ceremony will take about 30 minutes, and allowing about 30 minutes for guests to be seated, you're looking at them leaving the ceremony venue about 2:30 and showing up at the reception venue between 4 and 4:30. That's not too big of a gap, in my opinion. Smiley smile

DC War Memorial or Fathom Gallery! Both are options at this point for the ceremony.

Something you could potentially look into is one of those bus tours were people sit on the top of the bus and get a tour of DC. I have seen this done for weddings in DC with a gap!

I don't think that's too bad of a gap - especially if you start cocktails and mingling around 4 or 4:30!

I think I’m DC people will find stuff to do. We went to a wedding in Philly where there was a gap in between and we went to an outdoor beer garden in between. I think as long as DC is in phase 2 or 3 you will be fine. Dc has a lot of outdoor stuff like on the wharf where people can grab some drinks!

We live in MD close to DC! I think this is unavoidable in some situations. I'd just suggest providing a list of nearby things to do, especially if people haven't seen DC before.
