E-Ring Issues!!

Sharlenn, on September 29, 2012 at 1:44 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

When I first got my e-ring it was a loose on the finger but snug over the knuckle. I hated that it spun on the finger but our jeweler said wait to see about re-sizing b/c fingers swell in the summer. Up until a few weeks ago I only took it off about once a week. Then I read something about taking it off every night and I started doing that. I noticed that my knuckle started getting little sore but I ignored it. Now now my knuckle swollen and it hurts like crazy to get the ring off. I took it off last night intending leaving it alone for a week to let the swelling go down but I feel naked without it and I already tried putting on again, which would take significant effort. My wedding is in 21 days and my wedding band will be the same size as my e-ring which at this rate won't fit. Anyone else ever have this happen? If so, how long did it take for the swelling to go down? Any home remedies to make the swelling go down faster?

Are you knuckles just swollen? or your entire finger? Reduce your sodium intake. Sodium can cause you to retain water and swell. If its just the knuckle, only time and leaving it alone. You more you mess with it, the longer it will take to reduce in size.

I agree with decreasing your sodium. Also decreasing carbs in general and drinking lots of water will decrease water retention and swelling. Put ice on your knuckle as well.

Thanks ladies. The ring is not on my finger right now. I took it of to force myself to stop bothering the knuckle with it. It is just the knuckle that is swollen. When I get the ring past the knuckle the ring is fine. It even spins around the finger. I guess I will just have to wait and leave it alone.

Maybe soaking your hand in epsom salts will reduce the swelling of your knuckle.

My engagement ring was looser past my knuckle, but once i got my wedding ring on there with it, it's all very snug (both rings are the same size). so once the swelling goes down, having 2 rings on your finger should help it from feeling so loose.

Sharlenn - my ring was just like yours. It was snug over the knuckle and would spin on finger. I HATED that. I have never had a ring do that before. And we spent thousands on this ring. I was really frustrated by this. I was so afraid of hitting the center stone and losing it. Now I have the wedding bands tacked to it and it never spins - nothing happens. But I NEVER NEVER EVER take my ring off. The only time my ring comes off is for cleaning. I do everything in it. Remember diamonds are a rock - literally and therefore one of the hardest substances out there. Gold is a metal and also a hard substance - so what is there to damage except for a prong or to lose the diamond. That's why you have it insured.

For now you'll have to wait for the swelling to go down, or until you can get your ring back on. But then I would't be taking it on and off. The more you take it on and off the more your finger is going to swell.

@Shar. No I don't pop my knuckles. I think I just irritated the knuckle by constantly taking it on and off

Please be aware that even though diamonds are "rocks" and gold is a metal, they do require care to prolong the life of your rings. Bleach can damage the gold, a hard knock can chip a diamond. The jewelry is not as indestructible as you may think.

I love all the helpful responses! I know there are worse problems to have then having to go a week or so without a beautiful diamond ringSmiley smile

I will soak, ice, rest and avoid poking at it for a full week. Hopefully that will start the healing process. I am going to pick up my wedding band next week. When I last tried on the band it was too big so that is why its still at the jeweler. At least I can talk to the jeweler about size with two weeks to spare before my wedding (which is only 21 days away...eeepSmiley smile

I take my ring off every time I shower, but my knuckles are small so I was able to size my ring to my finer, not knuckle. They guy at the jewelry store was surprised by this. Said most people have to size it to the knuckle. Sounds like you might have to get it sized for your knuckle and live with it. My fingers swell on and off, depending on humidity, work conditions, how cold I am, so sometimes my ring is more snug than other times.

My platinum e-ring also turned so the diamond was toward my pinkie. Got 2 small platinum bumps added to the inside bottom (1 on either side) and that keeps it from turning.

I'm so sorry to hear you're having such troubles with your ring! But I do totally understand. I sprained (I almost broke the darn thing) my ring finger awhile back and wasn't able to get my ring on my finger for about a month. The knuckle is still larger than what it was, but I am able to get the ring on without trouble. As the other ladies have said, just give it some time and soak it and it should be fine. Smiley smile
