Duplicate gifts etiquette

Janet, on August 17, 2015 at 1:56 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

So i had a shower yesterday, and got a few duplicates. They are all from Target, and Target literally has problems with their registries every single day. So i unwrapped 3 (three!!) griddles, two toasters, and a few other things not even on the registry.

Of course, no one gave gift receipts, since everyone thought we wanted it (which we did!), but i have no need for three griddles. Obviously, everyone gets a thank you, but should i mention that we exchanged a gift for another wanted item? At the end of the shower, everyone was laughing about it, and it is all family, so no one can be that offended.

My MOH says I should mention the return, but it seems a little off-putting to me. Am i just overthinking this?

Thanks!

If they purchased off your registry (i.e. if they had the cashier scan your registry at the purchase) you don't need the receipt, it will automatically pull it!

Also, target generally accepts returns without a receipt, you just get the current cost, versus whatever they paid for it. So if you go that route make sure the items aren't currently on sale!

ETA - I just realized I didn't answer you question haha DON'T mention the return. That is for sure a no-no.

No I would not mention the return!!! There's no need for them to know that the new griddle you kept isn't the one that they gave you!

We got duplicates of a few things due to Target being dumb as well (ladies who haven't registered: TARGET SUCKS.) I just thanked them both for the gift as though they were the only one that gave it to me.

I got 5 cheeseboards. Think I'm just gonna keep them all. Who doesn't love cheese?

I wouldn't mention the return either! Like Lynnie said, if they ever showed up at your house expecting pancakes, they won't know that's not the exact griddle they gave you!

    Oh my goodness 5?!

Target is the WORST with registries. We re-did it like 5 times.

Don't mention the return. If they were all there and know you got 3, it's pretty clear you'll return 2!

I wouldn't mention the return! We got duplicate towel sets (8 bath towels in stead of the 4 we registered for) and I just wrote my thank yous last night. We plan to return 4 and keep 4 but I didn't make any mention to either person that we planned on returning some. I would just return then and put the money towards something you don't get off of your registry!

Don't mention the return in the thank you! I've not had a problem returning without receipt at Target recently. Customer service must get registry returns like that all the time since they suck so much!

Don't mention they return. If they were there, they saw you open duplicates and expect that you'll exchange them. Otherwise, just word the thank you like you only received one.

I wouldn't mention it. No one wants to know that their gift was the one that got returned..

I have to admit.. this post is totally making me rethink my Target registry. Might have to ahead and remove it from our website.

I would not mention the return. As others said, just write the thank you card. Since they were all there and saw the duplicates I would guess they would assume you would be returning a couple of the duplicates, no need for them to know whose you chose to return. I would think it would be in bad taste to mention a gift return in any case. One of my friends at my shower got me a crockpot, cookbook, crockpot acesories, and a few other things. I already have 2 slow cookers, so I returned the one she gave me, but kept the rest of the gift. I felt no need to tell her about the return, it was a very nice gift, I just don't need 3 slow cookers.

I wouldn't mention it personally. Esp since you are keeping one of each so really for all each person knows you kept theirs. I didn't even mention returns I made when nearly everyone decided to go off registry and managed to buy things we either already owned, didn't need/want, or decorative items that were VERY far from our taste.

Luckily for us our Target registry just showed everything as being purchased (even though it wasn't) so no dupes, just got nothing off of our Target registry haha. Serves them right!

@Staci, I accidentally marked a few things as purchased on Target somehow, and now they all show that way. Oh well, guess that's why we did BBB too.

This is good info to know.... Although I think one of the places we will register is Home Depot.
