Drummer to play along side dj?

chridy, on December 25, 2016 at 9:36 AM Posted in Planning 0 13

I'm thinking about hiring a professional drummer to play alongside my dj at my wedding. Has anyone ever hired a drummer/dj combo or been to a wedding that's had one? I'm having a rather small wedding with 120 people. Any thoughts? Thank you!

No- this never goes well- I promise you.- hire a band. or hire a DJ. or hire both to work different times. (ceremony/cocktail vs reception or whatever)

    Secondly -@ 120- that's not that small.

Would the drummer play during the songs being played by the DJ? I'm confused. Also, 120 is by no means a small or even medium sized wedding.

Thank you for your comments. I to thought my 120 wasn't small but it seems like many vendors I've contacted have categorized us as such.

The drummer and dj would be playing at the same time to the same music. I originally liked the idea because it's unique and makes the music have the "live music" sound. I have found many freestyle drummers that play with djs but I've never seen it at a wedding, more in a large club setting.

I would find it super weird to have a musician playing along to pre-recorded music. I think I'd just be wondering if he was your cousin who begged you for a gig or something,

Unless a vendor has packaged themselves as a DJ and drummer duo, I would not do this.

I've seen this; apparently it's the new thing to sell to couples.

Personally, I think it's weird. It's like Karaoke with bongos....

I think it's called "fusion?" I've seen it with a drummer and DJ and I thought the drummer was way too loud. He went berserk on the bongos. I'm not a fan of loud music, to begin with. Maybe you could get a guitarist, instead?

If you've seen it in a large club setting, it may not be the feel you're going for for your wedding? I don't think 120 is a small wedding but what you're describing may be too loud unless you have like 400 people.

I think the dj would have to be up to it.

This honestly sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. As a guest, the drummer would probably make me leave early with a migraine.

Also, I agree with pp. 120 is a fairly large wedding. Our wedding is small and we have a max guest list of 30.

I've seen this at Indian weddings with a dhol player (Indian drummer) but that's a drum strapped to the body and they go out on the dance floor with it. That was awesome. But just a drummer in the corner with a drum set? Sounds loud and kind of odd to me...

I'm not sure as a guest I would enjoy this. Drumming can get very loud and I think some of the older folks probably wouldn't be able to hear very well or enjoy themselves.

I feel like this would be extremely weird. As a guest I would be really confused as to what was happening for entertainment and would honestly think that one or the other was playing when they shouldn't be
