Driving distance for out of town guests?

Currently looking at venues and really liked a venue right on the North Fork of Long Island. My family is based in NYC and his is based mostly in Florida. Fiancé thinks that many people on his side of the family won't RSVP because the venue is a 1 to 1 hour and 30 min drive out east after flying into JFK or LGA, where they can't turn it into a destination "NYC" getaway. Is that too far to expect guests to drive after a flight? As for the "NYC vacation" aspect, guests can surely plan for additional time to visit the City, but the main attraction should be the wedding, no? I have no interest in selecting a venue in the five boroughs as I do not want a "city" wedding but also do not want to pick a venue that is inconvenient. Any thoughts appreciated here.

Loved this advice and appreciate all the detail you put into it! Totally have had the experience where traveling to the venue was a bit far, but friends made it worth it. We've booked our venue and its about 50 mins from either NYC or JFK so no one will be majorly inconvenienced. Thanks for sharing your experience with me Smiley smile

Thanks for this suggestion! We just booked the Somerley at Fox Hollow but if we did decide to go with a venue out East, MacArthur Airport was going to be the recommendation for our out of town guests Smiley smile

I’m nervous many won’t RSVP for ours either 😬 we’re asking them to drive 5 hours

I was considering picking a venue closer to home but his mother told me that I could pick a place across the country if I wanted to (which was my first choice and I’m still so sad about it😭) so I went with choice #2 which is still 5 hours but she said whoever wanted to be there for us would be and those that didn’t want to wouldn’t and we wouldn’t want those people there anyway then

She's right! It's a drive for sure but ultimately those who will attend, will attend. What I'm learning in the wedding planning process is that you cannot please everyone. Everyone ultimately has their own lives going on, so they will either attend or not attend (no matter how awesome, close or convenient you try to make your wedding). I am sure you will have a great day with your guests and ultimately, as long as you and your groom are happy, it will be YOUR amazing day!

Congratulations on booking your venue! Fox Hollow is really nice and, if I remember correctly, a lot of hotels nearby for your out of town guests. You're wedding will be beautiful.

Thank you so much Sharon! The hotel being adjacent to the property making transportation a non-issue for my guests was a huge factor, along with the fact that the venue is just so dreamy! There are also other more affordable hotel options in the area, which was important as well. Definitely don’t like only being presented with one expensive option personally after traveling! Thank you so much for your advice and kind words, it really helped me out! 🤗🤍

Flying to a wedding and then having to rent a car and drive 3 hours (round trip) to attend a wedding would annoy me and possibly result in an RSVP of “decline”, since that’s an option. I believe that destination weddings shouldn’t then require additional long traveling for guests through unknown areas. Sure, it’s your wedding day. But, if you desire to have guests attend a destination wedding, then you shouldn’t want to inconvenience them any extra.
