Drink tickets

My dad is paying for our reception and has set a budget. The restaurant chosen offers a open bar package or the option to do drink tickets. He is most interested in drink tickets. I'm not a huge fan, so I offered to cover what goes over his budget. Would you hate getting drink tickets at a rehearsal...

Our wedding the next day will have an open bar.

I don't understand rehearsal dinners. Unless you are having a massive wedding why would you do one? We just don't have them in Australia.

Natalie, just because you don't do them doesn't mean no one should. It's nice that you don't understand them, but many of us do understand that we are thanking those who attended the ceremony rehearsal.

I would not do drink tickets for any hosted event. Offering limited alcohol options is fine.

Tara, a cash bar is never ok when you are inviting people to a dinner / event.

No drink tickets. I'd hate it.

UO, but I wouldn't mind drink tickets at a RD, especially if the wedding itself is open bar.

@Natalie - they have nothing to do with the size of the wedding. They are only necessary if you hold a rehearsal before the wedding. Usually it is done the evening before the wedding. It is customary to treat anyone who attended the rehearsal and their significant others to a meal afterwards as a thank you for attending the rehearsal. Immediate family tends to be included as well. Sometimes people also treat their out of town guests (we did at mine).

If you don't have a rehearsal, no rehearsal dinner is necessary.

UO, but I wouldn't mind it or think it's tacky. Your compromise isn't bad tho.

For a rehearsal no one will care. I've had two tickets given to me at a wedding and I was pissed

Depending on your crowd, drink tickets probably aren't necessary. I feel like most people aren't going to want to get crazy drunk the night of the rehearsal dinner, they want to save up their energy for the wedding day! Couldn't the restaurant just add the drinks to the tab at the end of the dinner?

I feel like the subject of open/cash bars for rehearsal dinners varies. Where I live, no one ever has an open bar for rehearsal dinners. When I read this thread, I asked a bunch of people to get their opinion because I had never heard of that. Everyone I asked agreed that they have always been to rehearsal dinners with cash bars. As others have said, they only have open bars for rehearsal dinners. So it just depends on what you and your guests are comfortable with and expect.

Open bar at a rehearsal dinner? I've never seen that and I've been in quite a few weddings
