Drink Tickets at Reception

Karen, on August 12, 2017 at 5:13 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 25

Our ceremony is at 4p and the reception starts at 430p. Our venue willl allow a maximum of 3 hours open bar (430p -730p). Thereafter it is then cash bar. Other option is drink tickets where we give tickets to only those drinking. What is the thought here? We really don't want people buying their drinks.

Thanks ladies!!

Not everyone here is a lady.

Do a consumption bar for the remainder.

No, no, and no! Can't you cover the running tab, for the cash bar?

If cash bar is your only option because of the venue, then I'm not sure there's much else you could do. Three hours is a pretty good amount of time though! I'd be happy with that as a guest!

Consumption bar, and/or beer and wine only is acceptable.

Cash bar and drink tickets are so rude to your guests that have spent a lot of money to share your day with you.

Appreciate the feedback. Not sure on consumption is an option, but will definitely ask. We were only presented with the two options. Thanks ladies and GENTLEMEN

Just have the bartender total up the drinks and you pay the bill. That's called a consumption bar, and it's the only polite thing to do in that situation.

Jacks- not sure that is an option. We were given the choice of buying drink tickets or buying open bar for first three hours with cash bar thereafter.

Give them your card and open a tab. Everyone puts their drinks on your tab. Simple. No one should pay for drinks at your wedding

Karen, there's always an option for you to pay.

Wish we could, but the payment needs to be done in advance.

I don't see the difference between the guests paying for it and you paying for it from your venue's standpoint. They can call it a cash bar all they want but you'll just pay for it.

OK, so here's another idea using tickets. You buy like 200 tickets. Leave them at the bar. When a guest gets a drink, the bartender takes a ticket. Don't hand the tickets out, for the love of god.

A cash bar implies paying as you go, not in advance. Just pick up the tab or give them money in advance.

I DO NOT understand venues that do this.

Jacks- Great idea! Thank you - didn't even think about leaving tickets at the bar. Another great thought is doing open bar for three hours then giving the bar money to pay for drinks after the three hour period.

This is what everyone is saying. The venue isn't going to care who the money comes from.

    Definitely no.

Our potential venue suggested, or just the bridal party drinks for free, and I almost died. Switching to cash halfway through is the worst.

No way! Pay for extra hours of open bar. Making people pay is NOT ok.
