Drink Choice or song request In RSVP?

ReadyToBeARathfon, on January 4, 2016 at 9:48 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

I know a lot of people put meal choices on the RSVP card but since we are doing a buffet/station style dinner. I was thinking on the back of the card (or if I can find a site that lets me personalize the online RSVP) a song request spot and a drink choice spot. We are offering beer and wine at the reception. We thought we could give either a spot to select one or let me pick red or white, or favorite beer out out of a few choices. We are just wanting to make sure we have what everybody likes without having to much of some stuff. Is it to much or rude? The song request will go on the card the drink choices will most likely be on the website only if I can make it work.

I like the song choice idea better. Drink choice seems too complicated.

Buy your alcohol from somewhere that allows you to return unopened bottles or boxed e.g. Costco. That solves that problem.

If you are having a reception & want to ensure people dance then song choice.

We added a song request option to our website. Someone keeps going on and requesting "The Thong Song." Funny thing, I heard Sisqo currently lives in the suburbs of Minneapolis!

To answer your question, I think it will get too complicated to try and request drink preferences in RSVPs. Hopefully some of the other folks on here who are bringing in their own alcohol can give you an idea of what quantities they purchased. My philosophy would be you can never have too many bottles of wine. Stored properly, you can always drink the leftovers later.

I've never heard of doing the drink choice, and I kind of like it. However, remember that people may not stick to that. I have a hard time choosing a drink at a bar, let alone a month in advance.

With the song choice, I also like the idea and seriously considered it, but we had 200 guests, and if we'd played everything people requested then it wouldn't give the DJ a chance to do his thing. We decided we wanted the DJ to just do his job! (Which he did, and it was awesome.)

I don't like the song choice, only because we hired a DJ to run the party. A pro DJ can read the crowd and know what to play. If you bog them down with must plays from guests you can end up with no party. We gave the DJ like 4 must play songs and let him run with it and our dance floor was packed all night.

I wouldn't bother, honestly. You're asking people to RSVP a month ahead and no one remembers anything. Let the DJ do his thing.

I think a lot of people are likely to switch drinks over the course of a night. I'll usually have a beer at cocktail hour, wine with dinner, and then go back to beer or switch to liquor once the dancing starts. It's hard to indicate all that on a card, and it may all change if you have cider or I like your signature cocktail.

Song choices could be fun though!

Don't bother. It's hard enough to get people to RSVP, if they're attending or not. If you ask them additional questions, it might take them even longer.

I've only ever been sent one RSVP card, that had a song choice on it. It asked for 2 suggestions, but nothing from a named band. I thought it was off-putting, since I actually liked that band. It made my eyes roll to think the music they might be playing, instead. We got another invitation, for that whole weekend, so passed-up on the wedding.

We originally wanted to do a song choice on our RSVPs. I then realized that a 3 minute song for 70 people equals 3.5 hours of music. There is no way we can do that and still fit in all of the other things. So we are tossing the entire idea. Our DJ allows requests and we only have about 4 songs we have told him we don't want played (no matter who requests it).

Song choice for sure! Drink choice is a good idea but I feel like that could end up getting more complicated than you need it to be.

    Don't do the drink thing.

Let's say you put five beers to choose from. Almost everyone picks the same two, so you serve those.

But the other people who chose the alternate beers are going to be like, "WTF, why did they ask what kind of beer I wanted if they aren't going to have the one I picked?"

I agree with drink choice being a bit complicated. I've seen where couples ask for song requests, but I would keep in mind how many guests you have / how long the reception is. If every guest requests a song (and that takes up most of the reception) you're pretty much doing the DJ's job for him/her!
