I am also plus sized. My wedding is in September and I got my dress in February. It was off the rack at David's Bridal.

I purchased mine about a year and 1 month before my wedding. I hadn’t planned on it, we hadn’t even set a venue yet, but I randomly stumbled across a dress shop while out looking at venues and fell in love.

I started looking a year from my wedding date and purchased it about 10 months before. If you plan to buy a sample I would get it at least 4 months before to allow time for alterations, if you plan to order it I would start now as they say it can take 6-8 months for your dress to come in.
