Dress Shopping

Rebeccah, on June 15, 2019 at 11:25 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 25
Hey guys, how early are you or did you look for your dress? My wedding is in about 10 months and I’m plus sized so I’m nervous about dress shopping. I’m also going to see if I can loose some weight before my dress appointment so I was thinking about doing it in a month or two in August. The wedding is in April.
Thanks guys!

That is gorgeous! I've had my dress in mind for a little over a few months now. Our wedding isn't until next year but when I found the dress our date was originally 2021 lol.

I started looking about a year out, and found the one and ordered about 10 months out.

Start now. 😀 Unless you go to David’s, most dresses will take 6-9 months to arrive. Dresses can be taken it up to 2 sizes so it may be best to order the size you’ll measure at right now. But if you’re SURE you can drop weight tell the bridal consultant and you both can decide to go down a size or two. But remember it’s easier to take in a dress than let it out (some dresses can’t be taken out, some may have up to one inch of extra fabric).

They say you should buy your dress at least 9-10 months before your wedding to make sure you have time for shipping and alterations. I started shopping in December of 2018, purchased in January 2019, and I am getting married in October 2019.

My wedding will be may 9th 2020 and I have an appointment to go to David's bridal July 20th. I already have a specific dress in mind that they have in stock, so I'm hoping that is the one I end up choosing! But I would say start now, it's never to soon to look for a dress

Start now, alter later. But most importantly, do it when you are mentally ready. It’s ok to not make a big deal out of shopping, do what is best for you- it’s all about you feeling good!

For me that meant going alone to try on some styles then ordering online. I have my dream dress now and will alter it about 2months before the wedding (in October 2020).

I went 15 months out and I'm glad I did. My dress took much longer than anticipated to come in but since I went early I was able to have that buffer of time. Right now would probably be the best time to begin looking but if you want to wait till August that's fine just know there's a chance of having to be charged a rush fee, or the possibility that something may happen causing the dress to be delayed coming in.

I started looking 9 months out and ordered at 5 months! As long as you get your alterations in time, you can order whenever you want to. Some places like Anomalie require 12 months of you want a custom dress but if you are going the David’s Bridal or bridal shop route, you’ll be fine until 3 months ahead!

I would start not less than 8 months before the wedding. Some dresses take 6 or more months to arrive, plus time for alterations. If you drop 1-2 dress sizes, dress can be altered without a problem. If you’re planning on losing more than 2 dress sizes, then you should wait to buy, but be prepared not to be able to buy any dress you want (because of long lead times for some designers).

I bought mine at David's in February for my October wedding and took it home with me that day. I also have been losing weight and ended up being a smaller size than I thought which was a great confidence booster 😂 Good luck!

I bought my dress in March for my September 7th wedding, and it just came in yesterday! I went to a small, local shop though. They told me 3-4 months. I'm going Thursday to start alterations. My original plan was to buy off the rack. Oops. 😂

Go now, don’t wait. I too wanted to “just lose a few more pounds” before I shopped, so I put it off. Didn’t lose any weight so kept putting it off. I shopped at 6 or 7 months out and doing so definitely limited my options. Some designers have longer timelines for dresses to come in, so I couldn’t just chose any dress in the store, I had to choose dresses from a handful of designers that could work with my timeline. It worked out okay in the end as I found an absolutely perfect dress. But I *did* cause myself undo stress! So, I recommend going sooner rather than later— more time and more options can’t hurt.

I love that dress! My wedding isn't until November 2020 and I went in February out of pure excitement. I found a dress I loved and did purchase it at the size I am now. I don't plan on losing too much weight before the wedding because bridal gowns can only be taken in so many sizes before you need to order an brand new dress. If you go to David's bridal they'll have the dress there within a week or so. If you plan on going to a bridal shop they can take 8-10 months to arrive. If I were you, I would go now and order the size you currently are.

I started looking online about 17 months out, had my first shopping trip 15 months out, second a little over 2 months later. I just went for my third shopping trip at 400 days until my wedding(by chance it happened to be 400 days) and found The One and ordered it. The bridal store told me not to expect my dress for about 6 months, maybe even longer. They weren't sure. I'm glad I started early because I started feeling overwhelmed and had to take some time off from browsing.
