Dress shopping - long sleeves

Cassy, on May 20, 2019 at 12:31 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 25
I’m going dress shopping for the first time Friday! I’m excited but also nervous since I’m a plus size gal and have a lot more bad dressing room experiences than good lol. I’m very self conscious of my arms and was planning to only try on dresses with sleeves, I just can’t picture myself in anything else.

Has anyone else gone through this, and what kind of dress did you end up getting??

I tried on 2 white dresses and decided I hated dresses. I opted for a mother of the bride dress and I'm having sleeves made for it. I'm hoping it works out.

I read somewhere it’s best to try on a variety of styles to see what works best for your body type- and makes you feel amazing. You can always customize your dress and add other elements. I’m not a fan of my arms either so I am adding sleeves to my low back sheath dress. Not sure if it will take away from the dress but I want to try it anyway. Here’s me in my dress without the sleeves. I will update you once the sleeves are ready next month.

As another arm-conscious person, I fully expected to get a dress with sleeves. I found that sleeves make it harder to try dresses on though - sample dresses that are too small to close can be held with clips to get a good idea, but sleeves that are too small can't really be adjusted. It's hard to judge a dress when you can only get the sleeves 3/4ths of the way up, since that impacts how the rest of it lays too.

Which, amusingly enough, directly led me to try on strapless dresses. The consultant tucked some ill-fitting sleeves into the dress while getting the 'this is what we can add in alterations' sleeves, and I was like hold on, this isn't terrible after all. Maybe because wedding dresses are generally so attention grabbing anyway that they drown out the arms? I don't know.

I did end up getting a dress with some sleeve. I have precisely zero decent pictures of me in it, because I apparently cannot stop fidgeting, but here's the model picture. They're not long, but they cover the worst parts for me, and they're not fitted, so they're very comfortable.

That’s so pretty I love it! Just the right amount of arm coverage. I didn’t even think about how much of a pain it’d be to try them on lol but that makes sense

I was the exact same way. I read all of the WW posts that say "go in with an open mind" and "you don't really know what you want until you put it on" and thought for sure that wasn't going to be me. I knew exactly what I wanted. An a-line with long illusion sleeves and tattoo lace. Turns out covering my chubby arms in lace just draws more attention to them. I wound up with a sleeveless dress and I love it!

I feel the same way about my arms. I ended up getting the dress I love and am working on toning up my arms so they look better. Here's my dress!

I am not self-conscious about my arms but I did always envision that I would have a dress with sleeves. It's just something that I always wanted. I pictured fitted lace long sleeves but that's definitely not what I ended up with! You should definitely go in with an open mind - and try on lots of styles whether they have sleeves or not. They could potentially add sleeves to ones that don't have them - or you may find that sleeves emphasize the parts you don't like. I have a half sleeve on my right arm and I found that illusion lace sleeves made it look strange like it was dirty because you couldn't quite make out the tattoo but it didn't just look like skin lol

This is the dress I ended up getting! It has dolman sleeves which when they put it on me I was convinced I would hate - but I ended up loving it. This sample was like 5 sizes too big so they are quite large still but they are not the fitted sleeves I had always dreamed about and thought I would want.

Thank you. They have so many affordable very well made dresses. I couldn’t be the high quality and low prices. If you’re in Southern California you can visit their shops. My dress was only $469

That’s exactly what I’ve had in mind, but I didn’t even think about the sleeves drawing more attention to my arms. That makes sense though. I’m just gonna have to get over it and try on different styles and hopefully it works out lol thanks for sharing!!

I was the same way. I said I was going to get a dress with straps and nothing tight fitting no matter what. However, when I began shopping I fell in love with strapless fit and flare dress with a sweetheart neckline that was tight around my stomach and hips where I'm the most self conscious. You might surprise yourself with what you like when you see it on! Even though you have your heart on one style try on various styles because that's what I did and my dream dress ended up being the complete opposite of what I thought!

Gorgeous!! That’s so true I can look at dresses all day online and fall in love with them but I won’t truly know what I want until I try on different styles and see how they look on me. I’m gonna try to go in not thinking about my arms and try on everything!
