dress length?

Shay, on December 7, 2011 at 11:55 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

I really want my dress to fall at my feet but not drag the floor. Everyone says I'm wrong, that I will lose detail, etc. I'm more concerned about tripping than details. Is it typical to have your dress drag the floor in the front? The advice I keep getting is to kick it out with my feet as I walk. Is anyone else going this route?

If it does not drag too much why not wear heels or make it a little more puffy.

Mine falls just above my toes, I thought it was just a bit short but maybe I'm wrong. I was under the impression that you kick it as you walk too. My shoes will be peeking out as it is now.

I'm confused because I'm not.......oober girly and I'm not sure if I need to wear super high heels or if it should drag and I can sneak in some flats?

I am wearing flats but because mine has a train I will have it long enough so a little does drag. I'm gonna have to practice walking it it down steps cause i just know I'll forget to kick it out LOL!

I think this one is a matter of preference. There is no real right or wrong answer.

What does the bottom of your dress look like? Is it very detailed?

My dress will probably just brush the floor. But, I'm 4'11", I want to look as tall as possible next to my 6'2" groom, and I'm used to running around in 5" platform heels. Smiley smile

Have you already had trouble walking in the dress, or are you just worried about it? Could you go to the store and practice walking around in a couple pair of different height shoes? I mean yeah, I wouldn't want to lose detail at the bottom, but I don't want to think about every step I take either and risk falling down either.

Also- shoes with detail like beading/crystals/clips are more likely to catch on a crinoline, than a shoe that is smooth. And a stiletto will catch fabric easier than a chunkier heel.

    Good luck!

I agree with Kristy Y, I think its preference. You dont want it to drag cause you're right, you'll trip all over it. My ceremony is at my church and I'll have to walk up 4 steps at the end of the aisle so I'm purposely cutting mine a little shorter in the front so that I don't have to deal with it. Again your preference. If you get a good seamstress they should be able to direct you how you can keep as much as the detail you want.

I don't like dresses above the ground. I prefer a dress to be at my feet... if it drags, carry it as you walk slightly.

A slip that is stiffer at the bottom will keep the bottom of your dress slightly away from your feet. Waay easier for me to walk with a slip under my dress than with no slip. This won't work for all dresses though. Sheaths for example don't poof out enough.

I had my final fitting yesterday - so my dress is now fully hemmed - the underskirt has been cut and hemmed so that if you pull it straight it just touches the floor - the over layer is cut 1 inch longer then that - so even when i was walking normally it was barely touching the floor (i was not aware of kicking as i walked!). If its hemmed propery it shouldnt be an issue of you tripping over it - but im sure if you spoke to your seamstress they will be able to make it just a smigin shorter so there will be no chance of it catching.
