Dress length too long?

Desiree, on August 3, 2020 at 9:39 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 24

Hello fellow brides! I need help! My seamstress said my length was “ok” but I am starting to think it may cause me trouble when walking down the aisle or dancing! Alterations for just an inch or so would be another $350 on top of the other $700 I’ve already spent on the other alterations. (side note, it was so pricey because I had to have someone else redo alterations from the first place I took it to, lesson learned) 😫 I’m not sure if the little bit that is dragging is worth the extra $350. When the bustle is up, it doesn’t seem too bad but when the train is down, that’s when it seems like it may be too long in the front. Is the length just right or is it too long, I can’t decide. Any Suggestions?

You answered your own question. Another $350 so no lol. Personally for me I am all about the length (calling Princess Diana's wedding dress) but I think the dress is lovely. We are brides over think everything and no one will notice and I think you will be fine for dancing. Just no break dancing. Smiley winking

Have you tried walking around in it? If you’re tripping on it then it might be worth getting it hemmed a little more. It would suck to be tripping on it all day at your wedding! If you can walk fine in it then I’d just leave it as is.

I have walked around in it and don’t trip on it necessarily but sometimes when I’m turning around or walking too fast it can’t get bunched a little and I have to kick it out....would that be considered normal?

I agree that you really need to try walking around in the dress to know how much difference it would make to hem it. I'd also try going up and down a couple of steps. Once you try those practical tests, you'll know if it's truly too long. Are you currently wearing a mermaid slip with the dress? If not, the full part of the slip might help lift the skirt a little bit more if it's just a little bit too long, so that might be a different work-around. (Also, if the dress is a bit too long, there is a pretty good chance that you or someone else might step on it and tear the lace.... That concern might make it seem more worth the extra cost.) Beautiful dress! Smiley heart

Ideally you would want to be able to walk pretty easily in it, but if it’s not seriously impacting your ability to walk around and the cost of the alteration is that high, I think it’s probably fine to leave it.

Christina, thank you so much! I’m going to try and do another walk test tomorrow and see if I notice any difference. Thanks for your input!

I tried a few walking “tests” but I have a short hallway with wood and the rest of the house is carpeted so it’s hard to get an idea with carpet, I sink in and reallly start stepping all over the edge of the lace. My seamstress said not to walk on carpet because it’s not going to give an accurate idea of the length. When I walk on the wood floors, I feel like I have to kick it out when I turn. If I find myself kicking it out a lot, should I consider taking it in more?

I haven’t looked into a mermaid slip, is that something you can wear underneath without having it sewn in?

You look beautiful and the dress isn’t too bad either, lol. Unfortunately, It appears to be a tad bit too long. It is normal to kick the dress while walking or maneuvering in formal wear but I noticed it kinda curves inward when your standing still. As someone who’s making her own wedding gown and works at a bridal shop, I’d try a mermaid skirt before hemming it. It’s a separate skirt that goes on along with your other undergarments and will help shape the dresses skirt more. It will add volume and raise the dresses hem some. The scalloping on your hem is what’s driving the price up, maybe ask if they can raise the hem on the other layers and leave the sheer scalloped layer as is. It will give the same affect as your train, hopefully cost less, and prevent you from thinking about tripping all day. I hope this helps, good luck

Might be normal depending on the train. Wedding dresses tend to be more than a bit unwieldy, lol. That said, when you walk forward, your shoes should peak out with each step so that you can't trip. If you're concentrating it might not seem likely, but in the moment, I promise you won't be thinking at all about walking "carefully"

Looks beautiful! I love your dress! What kind of shoes are you wearing with it? Maybe with the mermaid slip & different shoes, it’ll give you just a little bit more height. Just a thought...

What’s funny is my dress didn’t feel that long when I was walking around in it but yet on the day of my wedding that’s when it was too long to walk in aha but I didn’t wear heels either so if you are then it might be fine

In some pics the front looks long. But, I'm with you, too expensive. Have you thought about a higher heel?

It is normal to have to kick out a dress to get it right, especially when turning, etc. However if you’re walking outdoors on grass etc. for the ceremony or what have you, typically you do want it a little shorter. However for indoor, flat spaces you’ll probably be ok as your seamstress stated. I would consider a heel or higher heel as someone else suggested.

Is that the length with your wedding shoes on or barefoot? if your shoes are on, then yes in my opinion a little long, but if they aren't on, put them on and then look at the length.

Slips are amazing! They slide on underneath your dress like a shirt, no sewing required! Definitely try one on at least, it'll be a WAY more cost effective option for you than the $350 hem. Slips will add volume and give a bit of lift, and they make it easier to walk in since they lift the fabric up from your legs.

Example of a good slip for your style:

    Mermaid slip:

    MERMAIDSLIP_WHITE_LING_OM_PROD10_0900_H?

    Trumpet slip:

    TRUMPETSLIP_WHITE_LING_OM_PROD10_1556_H?

I am SO glad I reached out to you all! I had never heard of or even considered adding a slip! I think that really may do the trick! I am already wearing the shoes I bought for it which they’re pretty tall as is so a new pair of shoes wouldn’t have Fixed my issue.

I am looking online now for a slip to order and try on! Thank you all so much!
