Dress Hemming

lilchameleon, on January 23, 2018 at 4:58 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 29
Curious about if most brides need their dress hemmed? I’m 5’7” and when I ordered my dress they mentioned I’ll need it hemmed or wear heels to give me a few more inches. My dress is a Stella York. I’m wondering how much it’ll need to be hemmed. I’m really scared about losing the detail in the scallops. 😬 my seamstress said not to bring it in until 3 months beforehand (I recently ordered it so it won’t be done till this Summer anyway) and I’m planning on losing more weight. But now my brain is all about shoes. Did any of you either hem your dress or did you buy heels? If you opted for heels- how tall did you go?

I'd find shoes that you are comfortable wearing. When your dress comes in, try it on with the shoes and see if it needs to be hemmed. If it does, talk to your seamstress about your concerns and go from there.

If you have a scalloped lace hem, they will remove the lace, hem it, then reapply the lace. It's called "hem lace" and is usually slightly different than the rest of the lace on the dress. That's what they did for mine.

ETA: This was my dress, they removed the hem lace (slightly scalloped), hemmed it to length, then re-applied the hem lace and you couldn't tell it was ever removed.

Second what Cows said. My dress will be getting hemmed and they told me they'll remove all the edging, shorten it and then stitch the edging back on to the dress.

My dress is being hemmed, but i am only 5'3" so there is a TON of dress being cut off. However, i wont be losing any of the details on the dress.

You won't lose any detail. Usually what they do is take off the lace, hem the underlayers, then reattach the lace at the new appropriate place. I wore 3.75" heels but still had to have my dress hemmed a couple inches, and the scalloped lace looked exactly as it did before they hemmed it.

Yes I'm 5'9 and my dress needed a hem. I have lace and scallops on mine. It will all be done by hand and will be $150 for the hem

I just took my dress to the seamstress and I thought I would lose the details and scalloped lac on the bottom but my seamstress says I won't.

I'm 5'9" barefoot, and only didn't need a hem because I put a crinoline under my dress to poof it out. I would have needed a tiny hem otherwise.

Daughter is 5'11", and with a smaller slip (not the poofiest one they have) under a Rebecca Ingram A-line ballgown, she needs no hemming -- the dress is the perfect length with flats. (FH is only 1" taller than she is so she was thrilled with the flat shoes and no hem option.)

I am about 5’6” and have short heels (and a short groom anyways) and my dress is being shortened a bit. As for losing details, I was worried about that too as they had to take my dress in a lot since it wasn’t in my size and I have to say I can’t even tell the difference. It will not be a problem for a good seamstress. Just had my second fitting today actually.

I bought my dress with the Hem unattached. So that I could still have my leave detail that goes up the front and side and back of dress. I can buy the shoes I want and not trip on the Hem or wear spikes.

My dress with my heels is perfect length, honestly I could go in flats and it wouldn’t be too bad either. I’m 5’7 btw.

I'm 5'6" and my dress will definitely need a hem, by several inches. Wearing heels for me is not possible because of a recent foot surgery, but it would still need to be hemmed regardless. But like others have said, your seamstress will be able to take the length off while still preserving the detail on your dress.

When I ordered my dress they told me I will need to wear 2inch heels, I'm 5'7". She said because of the detailing & train it can't be hemmed. I really wanted to wear flats, heels are not for me buy I found 2inch wedge flip flops that I love!

I ordered these shoes. They're jelly shoes which is kinda fun. I'll try not to worry about it until the dress comes in. He's 7inches taller than me, so I have room to work with on shoes I think.Dress Hemming 2

I ordered 4 inch heels and am also using a hoop skirt during the ceremony but removing it for the reception so I'll need to have mine hemmed regardless. I'm 5'5 and with the heels I still have a few inches to be hemmed.

Another potential alteration which will result in a "shorter" dress is if you need the shoulders pulled up at all... My dress is too long in length but the bodice is too long too... because I have a freakishly short torso. I will likely need a hem but it will be less of a hem after they pull up the shoulders because getting the top of the dress where it needs to be will lift everything up... make sense? You're taller than me, so if you need the top / shoulders adjusted that may limit the hemming needed too.

But as PP's have said - seamstresses are magicians... they will keep your detail so make sure you get shoes you like and are comfortable in... they will make it work. Smiley smile
