Dress help

Bonnie, on February 6, 2020 at 5:59 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 3

Hi everyone,

I am yet again here with a dress question. I decided awhile back to just do a white dress (was considering black, or having 2). I actually ended up getting my dress a few months ago at a sample sale, half off. While in it, I loved it and it is a great dress, I still think it is beautiful. However, I think the elation of a dress fitting me actually made me like it more than I do now. In fact, that day I actually tried on a few dresses I liked, including the one I'm having dress regret for and that everyone I show pictures to, asks why I didn't get it.

I didn't get it because it was a sample size 8, and I'm a bridal 12. It was demoralizing to be strapped into dresses that were no where near closing on me. I could have ordered it in my size (this was in the boutique of that designer) but I felt in my experience that I could never gauge what a dress would look like on me, because it was always too small. I went to 2 boutiques in LA where the samples were all 8s. I think when a dress is too big, the clipping is a little more effective at showing you what it will look like fitted to you, but in my case I was always underwhelmed because clipping a too small dress doesn't show me much. So when I went to the store with samples and found a sample 12, I actually finally saw what a dress looks like that fits well.

Anyway, I have been searching preowned sites for the dress that got away. It's too expensive to buy full price when I've already bought another dress that I can't return. I found it in a 12, bustline raised a little (good because it was a bit low), and hemmed for the bride who is 5'3 without heels. I'm 5'7 without heels- so is this a risk to buy? I have contacted her to see if she got it hemmed to her height with or without heels, I figure if she did with heels I could go without. The great news is it is half off the retail price too. I'm hoping this works out, but just wanted to ask fellow brides here if the height difference would be a big concern? It's a ball gown and has long train in back.

I hate to say this, but if it was made for someone who is that much shorter (especially with a bust line alteration) I don't think it will work 🥺

I did end up asking her more questions- the bust line is a deep v so they made it less of a deep v (which is good bc The dress was pretty low cut for my c-d cup size and she has bigger breasts than me). She hemmed it w her heels so 5’ 5.5”. I’m 5’7 or a little under that, def not over, so I think w flats I will be fine. I also have a great tailor to get advice from if it happens to look a little short (has lace tulle overlay and blush tulle layers under that). The dress was half off retail so if it doesn’t work I will just repost to sell over time and use the one I originally bought. That model has sold for close to retail on many preowned sites and is a fall 2019 release so there is demand for it.
