Dress Fittings/second Thoughts

Laura, on May 22, 2020 at 3:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 3

Hoping to get some input from brides who have been through fittings/are going through it. I had my first fitting before the pandemic hit. My dress was huge on me but she made the correct alterations and I went in for my second fitting today. The dress still did not fit the way I wanted it - the waist was not defined, other parts were still loose and it was not as flattering as I envisioned. I am relocating to a different city in early July so the dressmaker wanted to get as much done as she could before I left and then I can go back if I need to/don't find a good tailor in my new city but in the midst of all of it we ended up postponing until next summer. I am not sure if my non-excitement is coming from being down about having to postpone, the current fit, or the dress itself. I do not want to go through having to buy another dress and do alterations so I am wondering if any other brides have been in the same boat, especially in the midst of all the craziness that is going on, and what has been helpful for you.

Kind of in the same place? My dress was in the middle of fittings right before Covid because of our 4/4 wedding, and I'm still not sure of the fit because I got my dress shipped to me. What I'll probably end up doing is taking it to a different David's Bridal - had a lot of issues with the one closer to me - closer to the date to double check the fit. Don't give up yet! I'd get it back from alterstions and see the fit before you decide.

I was in the middle of fittings for my reception dress, which was 3 sizes too big. I may or may not find out next weekend how it fits after this round of alterations (if it reopens). But when I do go back, I'm just going to pay for what has been done so far and just keep my dress until I know my wedding date for certain.

I think this is fairly normal! At my first alterations appointment they marked where things needed to come in and be hemmed etc. At my second appointment the bodice work had been done and they had started shortening the straps but left them unfinished to check on me, they'd also sewn a guide line in place to hem my dress but checked it on me again before going through with the rest of the hemming. I thought things would be slightly further along - but I'm also no seamstress!! It's definitely a multi-appointment process!
