Dress crisis

Adriana, on May 19, 2021 at 6:52 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21
I’m so upset and just need to vent...I bought my dream wedding dress last June off the rack (last one of its kind). The problem was the dress was too small but the lady at the store said not to worry and it could be let out for a little extra room. My aunt is a seamstress and looked at the dress today and said there hardly any material to let the dress out! The straps are also way too tight and I truly cannot breathe in this thing. It just doesn’t fit right and all the alterations it would need might affect the way it fits and overall shape of the dress. My aunt said it would probably be best to just find a new dress that fits better that I’d be comfortable in.

I’ve searched high and low and wedding is July 3rd. Everywhere I go says it’s too late to order something and I need to find something already in the store that I like. Finally found ONE dress that everyone says looks great so I impulse bought it. I’m looking at pictures and I think I look so horrible. Not flattering and I have no waist definition. I can’t tell if I just have a horrible self image or if the dress truly does not look good on me. To be fair, I don’t have any makeup on or hair done AND my mom is not a very good photographer...Even if it doesn’t look good, what can I even do at this point?? Does this dress look frumpy, or am I being over critical? Adding pics of the new dress below.

The dress is beautiful on you! If you want more definition at the waist, you could add a ribbon belt. I don't think it's frumpy at all.

It's beautiful on you. I agree with the ribbon belt. I loved how it accentuated my waist. And added a little bling.

I think it’s absolutely gorgeous on you! The color is beautiful and I love the idea of a ribbon sash/belt. You will look even more amazing when you have your full look with hair and makeup too!

I think you're being over critical. The dress isn't fitted to you yet and like you said you don't have on any accessories.

It looks beautiful! the colour is so unusual and so is the lace/embellishment design! I agree a sparkly belt would help, and when you've got your hair and makeup done, accessories, maybe a veil.... you're going to look stunning.

Beautiful! I’m in agreement with everyone else on the ribbon belt, that will help give it the definition you’re looking for. You’re going to be gorgeous.

It really is a beautiful dress. Im glad you found one in time for your wedding.

Either a wide ribbon or a sparkly belt would add some more definition to your figure. Also, if you are going to wear a veil it will add another element of interest to the back of the dress. Be kind to yourself and remember you will always be your own worst critic.

Try adding a sparkly belt and a minimal a line or mermaid underskirt to flare out the skirt. The sheath sillouette seems to be your complaint, but that dress is beautiful.

It looks but you of course wanna have something you’re genuinely happy with on your big day.

You could also try something like this detachable skirt to give it a bit more body at the bottom. Most bridal salons should have something similarDress crisis 4

You look absolutely gorgeous! In addition to all these great ideas, don't forget what a veil can do. If you're not sure you want one, you can order one on Amazon to try out for $20. Don't forget, most beautiful bride is a happy one. At first glance at the post, I assumed this was the dream dress you were sad about and thought to myself "it fits so nicely!".

I do not think you look frumpy at all!

What did you like about the dress that caused you to buy it?
What specifically do you not like now?

I don't care for belts personally, and in your case I think a wide belt might make your waist look wider, not slimmer, but you can try it. I do think you look beautiful and the dress fits you perfectly right now, no alterations look like they are needed.

If you really want more waist definition, I will second the suggestion of an overskirt as a possible tweak. It will make your hips look fuller and therefore your waist look smaller. You could have a skirt that just goes around the back and is designed to show off the front of your dress (like the photo a previous poster shared) or one that completely covers the bottom half of your dress. If you go with the "complete coverage" option you actually might just be able to buy a tulle skirt to wear over your dress, which might be easier to source (and less expensive) than buying a bridal overskirt.

I do think the dress is lovely and you look great in it. I don't think you need to change it at all, but YOU loving it and feeling confident is what matters. You are a beautiful girl and deserve to feel that way on your wedding day.

Girl I FEEL for you. I literally had the same problem in that I HATED my dress that came from BHLDN and my wedding is July 24th and alterations were not possible. Every bridal shop cannot accommodate that short timeline, so I ended up impulse buying a dress online so I know EXACTLY how you feel. The stress of the situation makes it difficult, but you deserve to love your dress. I would try online sites that have returnable gowns if you are still not happy. Lulus honestly has A TON of gorgeous and affordable gowns that ship quickly. That being said I think this dress looks GORGEOUS on you! With a veil and accessories, you will look amazing Smiley diamond

Does not look frumpy at all, it looks beautiful on you! I'm guessing you are just not comfortable with it because it wasn't your first choice and you're disappointed and stressed about the whole thing. I'm sorry you experienced this!

I think a back necklace could be pretty with the low back if you're just looking to add more detail and aren't sure exactly what you want, I just suggested one on another post (link below). Personally I wouldn't do a belt with this style, but would second the recommendation to try an overskirt or underskirt as I think a little more fullness in the skirt would change the way you are seeing the waist - though you'll likely feel better about that once it's all fitted, too (I assume it's not yet?)
