Dress concern, can't alter, cant sit

Private User, on February 16, 2015 at 11:44 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 26

I bought my dress last July and I loved it, still do. At the time I didn't think about sitting, or moving in it, no issue when just standing. I fit in the sample size but ordered 1 size larger because it was slightly snug. Dress came in and I tried it on and it was a bit snug at the hips & thighs and I realized I can't sit, bend, take large steps, and I don't think I can lift it above my hips incase nature calls. At alteration I was advised the lining has enough to take it out 1/2 and inch but the outer lace lining is one piece with no real seam so not possible to let that out. The lady doing the alterations didn't think it needed to be let out. I love how curvy it makes me look and would never consider changing it or switching but not sure what to do. I am going to try and lose some more weight but the last few pounds all seem to be from my torso which is not helping as dress is a corset back. Any suggestions on what I can do? Do I really need to sit? Only 1 month to go.

I would get a white party dress to change into fo the reception and use the original drest for pictures and the ceremony.

With that being said, it was difficult to sit in mine so I didn't even try. I just mingled with guests and ate standing up as I mingled. But we had a short reception (2 hours) and foods that could easily be eaten standing up (appetizer style). I was able to remove my shape wear (longline bra) for our after party, which enabled me to be able to sit. (My dress was altered very snugly to my body.)

I really would prefer not to switch dresses and I love how my dress looks when I am standing. I just wasn't sure if it would be weird if I was to stand during dinner and speeches. We are having a plated dinner so I think it may be strange. I am making sure the first dance will be nice and slow and I plan on warning my FH after the ceremony not to move me to quick or dip me.

Can you not sit at all? I understand beauty is pain but not being able to sit, bend or take steps the whole time would drive me crazy. I want to be at least somewhat comfortable on my wedding day.

Try walking around in it for a few hours and see if that is something you could really live with but I would at least try to let out the lining to get some relief. It's all well and good for the seamstress to say it looks fine but she's not the one that has to wear it all day.

I know you love the dress but you are going to want to sit down at some point during the day

Do you have pictures of you in the dress? It would be easier to make suggestions if we can see exactly how it fits.

I guess I technically can sit if I am on the edge of the seat with legs extended straight out and am sitting up very straight. However I have yet to sit for more than a minutes, I am concerned about ripping the dress. I can walk, just not quickly or large steps. Maybe it will stretch out as the sample seemed larger than the size I ordered even though I got a larger size.

I had that same dress and while it was hard to sit (sometimes) it was totally possible. I didn't feel like it was going to rip at all.

Though it may not be the easiest solution, you might be surprised at how much looser it will fit in your legs if you did lose weight. I carry weight in my stomach mostly, but when my weight fluctuates at all my legs do too more than I ever thought they would. With a corset back I'd aim for eating clean and exercising regularly til then (if you don't already do that). And if it's still an issue, maybe considering a second dress just before the wedding as a back up in case it gets to be too uncomfortable

For a plated dinner, you'll need to sit. You could always have a backup party dress to change into if you just can't take it anymore during the reception. (I ended up changing for the trip to the after party and then putting my dress back on before going in. I also had a LBD as a backup, but didn't need it.)

My seamstress said all dreset stretch as the night goes on, so hopefully that may help some too. I know my seamstress had me sucked into my longline bra super tight on my final fitting - I had it hooked a little looser on the day of, so I could breathe and not have super skin overflow in the back.

Well, your dress look amazing. I can understand your current situation, but according to me a wedding gown should be more comfortable because it makes a direct impression to everyone. So I will suggest you if it has possible, then made some changes on your dresses or buy another one.

I would wear your dress as much as you possibly can before the wedding without getting it dirty. The reason the sample fit okay was probably because hundreds of girls tried it on before you which meant it stretched out. If you can just sort of stretch yours out by wearing it a lot, practicing putting it on and taking it off, that might help make it loose enough to sit in. I would just do the type of sitting where you're on the edge of the chair sort of leaned back straight, then try sitting up a little further and further at home. Then with the stretching you should be able to sit normally by the time of your wedding.

Also, wear the most comfortable shoes you can if you plan to stand that long!

If it was me I would just Wrap my legs and hip and enjoy my beautiful dress. I love what wraps have done for my body and it is so easy. That dress is made for you and you look amazing in it. Keep the dress you love and do whatever you must to be comfortable.

You do look stunning in the dress in this picture. Pardon me if I do say so, but can I just say that I am amazed at how much women will sacrifice for style & beauty. I was a nut about dress shopping, love clothes and girly things, (Edit) but comfort in my own skin, feeling comfortable and easy breezy is key to how I will rock the frock or style I am wearing. That's just me. My suggestion is to research/google exercises that target the area where you could use a little more room. In the time you mention you have, you won't lose so much weight or inches that it would make much of a difference in the silhouette that you want to maintain as is. I would totally recommend some sort of weight bearing exercise because rather than poundage, weights typically facilitate inches lost more than weight.

Try the "industrial strength" long-line spanx. (The kind you get in lingerie, not hosiery.) They can provide a little compression and can help the dress slide a bit more over the hip area.

I dont think you want to NOT be able to sit at all.. you will be miserable. I second the reception dress. I know it's not what you want, but You also don't want to look back & say I was miserable...

You shouldn't sacrifice your joy on your wedding day for tight fitting dress. Spanx should help & consider a short & flirty reception dress. Your wedding day should be about love & full of fun.

Is it possible to shift the dress a bit so you can sit and not rip it? Try stretching it a bit by wearing or letting out the lining some. Might help some, I think you will want to be able to sit. It is important to be comfortable to make your wedding day memorable because of fun and not discomfort in my opinion.
