Dress code help!

We are renting a house with a gorgeous view, so it will be an indoor/outdoor evening wedding. There will be an open bar and we are planning a tapas/small plates style reception.

To me, this is a more casual style (semi-formal, maybe cocktail?), but my mother mentioned that weddings formal/black tie events. What dress code would you suggest?

You are correct, this is a more casual style wedding. Semi formal would be perfect. You most definitely do not want to request black tie attire for this type of event. In order to qualify for a black-tie wedding, you have to meet lots of specific criteria, which the event you just described does not meet. Black-tie weddings are incredibly formal, expensive, and opulent.

Semiformal is Sunday Best which weddings are by default. Dress code is never mentioned unless it is super formal where the venue requires tuxes and gowns for entry, like the Oscars..which is very rare

Semi-formal sounds absolutely perfect for what you're describing! Cocktail attire would probably be too formal for this type of wedding, but semi-formal would be ideal

I would say semi-formal or cocktail. I'm sure you're just hoping no one shows up in jeans, correct? Either of those will let guests know to at least wear something you would wear to church!
