Dress Alterations: What to Expect

AJ, on June 27, 2018 at 12:12 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10
Today I finally begin alterations! I'm using a local seamstress who works out of her home and came highly recommended. My question is: what should I expect out of the first appointment? Is there anything I need to ask or be aware of?

I had my first fitting appointment almost 2 weeks ago. I brought almost everything to complete my look such as: shoes, veil, and slips/undergarment (I forgot my jewelry, UGH). Go in with an open mind and listen to the seamstress about recommendations to the dress. We basically talked about what needed to be done to my dress like hemming and some taking in on the shoulders. I also got to see how my whole look came together which was so exciting because I had just bought my veil so I wasn't able to try it on with my dress yet.

Hi, following this post because, same!

I would expect the seamstress will discuss my vision and see if she is able to execute. Also I will be discussing prices. Bringing my shoes and undergarments other than that I am curious what else to expect!

I just had my first fitting last night. My dress was obviously too big and too long so we discussed taking up the hem and bringing in the bust. I'm also having her put some cups in as I'm small chested and wasn't planning on wearing anything underneath. She played around with the pins until we felt like we had the correct fit. We also discussed what I wanted for a bustle. It was actually really quick and easy. I brought my shoes, no special undergarments needed for mine. I brought my jewelry but forgot to try it on with the dress, but next time I will try to remember.

Prepare to stand for a long time in your shoes. Also for me it was hard to get my dress off without moving the pins she put in place. Might want to bring someone to help you in the dressing room that you don’t mind being undressed in front of.

Make sure you bring your shoes... The exact pair because a shoe that is an inch to tall will make your dress an inch too short!!! Also, a bra (if applicable), corset, or girdle. If you aren't as blessed in the chest, tell her that you want cups sewn in to make you look like you have them (exactly what I did). Bring your veil to see if it overall flows. I find my veil was too short this way. So I had it made longer.

I won't be wearing a bra with my dress, either. Did they still have you wear one for the fitting?

Hi AJ!! Great question! Figuring out alterations and what to expect can be confusing sometimes, especially if you've never done it. My number one tip is to always ask questions!! If you are wondering about something don't be afraid to ask! We have a few guides that I think you'll find very helpful in navigating through your alterations!

I didn't wear one for the fitting, I wanted to make sure the dress would fit snuggly without it.

Make sure to bring your shoes. Be ready to stand for a while. You'll discuss hemming, bustle options, cups, how it fits. Be open to her suggestions and if something doesnt feel right, make sure to speak up.
