Dress alterations cost

Stephanie, on April 2, 2017 at 8:50 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

I found a dress and when I got my measurements, the consultant said my top fits a size 0 and my hips a size 10. She suggested I order a size 8 dress and alter from there. It seems like they'll have to take in the top portion a ton in order to fit properly. How much have you paid in alterations? I have no idea how much I should be expecting to pay.

It depends on your area and what you need done. I paid $285 for major resizing, a 9 point bustle, and a little length taken off.

Don't go to David's Bridal. They're terribly overpriced and not great. Find somewhere local.

I have the same issue and my alterations were 299$ at Alfred Angelo. They took the top in, hemmed it, and a very simple bustle.

I'm paying $450 so more than most people but I have a very intricately draped ball gown skirt. It's a one-person local business so I feel okay with supporting her.

I live in NJ. The place I went to doesn't offer alterations so I have to find someone on my own.

I'm having the exact same issue with my top being so much smaller and ordering a size 6. I haven't had my fitting yet but they estimated me $200-$400. I'm in the DC area as well

When looking for my first wedding dress years ago, I had a similar issue. There was a pronovias mermaid dress I loooooved, but when they measured me, my bust was 12, my waist was a 6, and then my hips according to their size chart were a 16. I did not honestly feel, due to the intricacy of the detailing and embroidery, that the integrity of the dress design would be maintained if they did indeed alter it that many sizes and so I ended up choosing a style of dress that wouldn't require that much wizardry.

Actually, the place I ended up getting my dress from then made a Muslim of your shape and measurements and then made the dress from there. But that designer went under...I wonder if that's an option for you these days anywhere...

I paid around $400 to have the straps shortened, the entire thing taken in almost 2 sizes, and a 3 point bustle.

I live in the SF Bay Area and I went to one of the most reputable seamstresses in my area, and she also turned out to be one of the most reasonably priced. Another seamstress I took it too said "minimum of $500" for what I needed done, so I was definitely happy with what I ended up paying!

I paid $600 at Davids Bridal for a hem, the arms to be taken in and both sides taken in. Ridiculous and wouldn't recommend you going to them. However, my dress was $1200 and I didn't want to risk taking this beaded gown somewhere else and then messing up the dress. I knew if I had Davids Bridal did alterations and something went wrong, they'd be responsible and would replace the dress or fix the problems.

I went to Alfred Angelo in NJ and they quoted $600 for a hem and bustle. Found an independent salon who did it for $180. So location/store chain varies greatly.

Jerseygirl, where did you go? Did they do a good job? I'm thinking of maybe going to a streams tress before I even buy the dress to make sure it's not going to alter the integrity of the dress. I loved the dress but I haven't bought it yet.

I went to Rienzi in Vineland and they are fabulous! I actually ended up buying my dress there as well (they are an authorized AA seller).

My alterations are going to be $750, but that includes taking the dress in a ton (small on top, wider on bottom), hemming, as well as adding a bustle of some sort. It's pricey, but my dress is exclusive to the shop I bought it from and am worried about anyone else dealing with it. Plus shipping it to where I live (bought the dress out of state) would add to the cost anyway.

I think it will vary greatly based on the material and how complicated it is to work with.

I paid 1,200 in alterations but in a hugh cost area of Houston (but she's supposed to be the best). That got me a lace top taken up in the shoulders, cups sewn in, a hem on 4 layers including tulle, and a 20 point french bustle.

I paid about $700 but well worth it though. Had my dress taken in,cups added, dress hemmed, bustle, taken it around my butt to fit tighter.

I was quoted $500, but look around. As long as they have good reviews and pictures, you may get a better quote

Find a great seamstress that does alterations. They are generally cheaper than any bridal shop.
