Is it okay to have a dress be a little too long?

Do you have any suggestion of where to order the right petticoat for my dress? It's like a sheath/ mermaid..so I wouldn't want any fullness on the hips or thighs..only below that. I think you described that type in your post. I'll be taking in the sides myself and adding a hook and eye for the bustle..or carrying it over my arm with the ribbon...but i really have to figure out what to do for the length in the front.

First of all, sheaths are straight up and down hip to floor. Mermaids taper down to a really snug fit at or Below the knee, where they flare out to a skirt usually at least 1½ times your shoulder or hips measurement. Distinctly flare at the base so much, it is why full and curvy women look more slender and curvy in them. Trumpet skirts generally are on gowns with a petite and classic upper body line, and they narrow down from the hips, not as tight as a mermaid, and are narrowest several inches ABOVE the knee and then gently flare out, not as wide at base as a mermaid. As far as I can see, you have a classic Grace Kelly softly curvy upper body with a Trumpet Skirt. Tulle netting would give a enough push out only if very very densely gathered, like a ballet tutu added at knees. Crinoline or Stiff Netting in tiers , each tier like a strip of gathers , three rows with each bigger than the last, actually pushes it away from your feet more, with far fewer layers by your ankles , and is usually best for a skirt near the floor, not at standard formal length of 2 inches above floor. I cannot post pictures on WW with this smartphone, and our iPhone and Android do not get signals from this location. To see one detailed picture, them a series which show all kinds of photos of mermaid and trumpet petticoats, google search is useless, it draws too.many unrelated images. Go to Bing.com (Microsoft search engine). In box, enter LYCRA TULLE IVORY MERMAID TRUMPET STYLE WEDDING GOWN PETTICOAT CRINOLINE SLIP this is an eBay store title, should be one of top to come up. The picture is a soft netting 3 tier trumpet petticoat. You would want this style in a stiffer or crinoline net. But you can see how it is structured. For a bunch of picture, mermaid and trumpet, to be sure I identified right from the picture on hanger. Go to Bing.com and enter STIFF NETTING PETTICOAT FOR MERMAID BRIDAL GOWNS and since mermaid is the most extreme of the trumpet cuts😊 you will get pics of both to see what matches your skirt, and in Bing, if you touch an image, it enlarges on your screen. If you touch and hold on the picture, it will sow a box, choose go to website, if the image came from one, so many lead to sellers. The smiley face is from my daughter who thought your gown made you look like a fairy princess the first time you posted it, why I had a picture in my mind associated with your name. And now, she loves your veiling train, lace on lace. If you are very short in clothing terms, commercial ones may not fit unless they say, for 5' to 5'3". Each tier will be too long. I can give you instructions in a post, how to make for your height, if you do not find a particular stiff net ( not tulle) tier petticoat, and will give measurements that make mermaid or trumpet, when you say for sure what you have. If you can see a gathered skirt with a casing, or a straight curtain to slide over a curtain rod, no pleats, then a tiered petticoat is easy least. My 8 year old just made her first 3 tier skirt, and 3 tier petticoat, for Halloween Gypsy costume. First time she ever followed instructions, no pattern, with me to answer questions but no help. The two took her 2 hours to cut the two sets of tiers, just straight long rectangles. And sew them, everything but inserting the elastic at waist. ( mom out of elastic - I had fabrics.) So easily done for someone who can take in or put darts in her own gown, as you say you can. You are way ahead of her. Look at pictures & see. I will watch the thread.

From the caption, this is 3 tier with a hoop, and a hoop means soft netting will do as well as stiff, because the push out strength to keep away from your feet comes from the hoop. Terrific. And since the top softer netting tier can compress under a narrow spot higher or lower, with hoops spring it out well, this will do for trumpet or mermaid. Also good. The only thing you will only know when it comes, is if it comes with the petticoat flare at the right point for your height. And that is easily fixed by making one tier less from top to bottom, or putting re waist casing or elastic lower so that the tiers will start at a point higher up on your leg. So both easy peasy fixes. This is the same construction with tiers of the one I said to look at, except hoops for stiffness, and is a trumpet. Looks fine if it fits, something no one knows til they try. Hope for exact fit! Good luck.

This last would be fine with the crinoline stiffness, by the top one you ordered, with hoops for stiffness, could be an equally good choice. The usual good price for good not too cheap, materials, is about $16-$24, before shipping, like in a store. So you are in the right ballpark. Some wedding salon sell them for $80-100, without any better quality, just proportioned for the exact dress. I would not cancel the first order, if they accept returns. Trying the two hoop one you ordered, and the third of the picture, might be nice to see whether you like hoops or netting, but either will do the job. It is preference.

The wedding isn't the end of your life, it is a new beginning. You will just have to go out in fancy clothes again to justify having invested in a formal slip! If you shorten them from the top, not bottom, this kind of 3 tiered crinoline is perfect for a favorite style of mine, now considered chic again: Below the knee tea Dresses of the style Given designed for Audrey Hepburn, as worn in in movies like Funny Face, Sabrina. Great for arternoon and evening, depending on the materials, a simple day dress, or in chi-chi fabrics for glamorous fancy dress. Surely you and your new husband will have some weddings for grandchildren and such, or a vacation or a 1night harbor cruise with dancing, some reason for a pretty dress to go with your formal style crinoline? When you get them and choose one, if too long, but tiers the size of the lower bell, they are easily shortened from the top without messing with the tiers. Are you taking a vacation or honeymoon within a few months of the wedding? Definitely buy a new dress to take advantage of your investment in slips. That is what I did. My now husband said, only you would justify two new dresses to go with wedding gown foundations, you already bought. When I went in to pick up my wedding gown, there were these 2 evening dtesses on the clearane rack, one tea length, one formal, and we were running way under budget... And if he thinks I am the only one ever to do it, he is too innocent.

I like to start a project, get the stuff, and complete it. The hard thing about many wedding things is that specialty items, away from a city that ever had a garment center ( used to live near Boston) there are few places to buy things, and simple alterations or gathering notions and clothing all depend on shipping time. Everything so drawn out. When we were engaged, my husband had to go to Montreal for 2 days for business. I have family just over the border south of Montreal. In 2 days my cousin and I got every bit of material, every snap or bed supply, to make her gown, and every little item , not dress or flowers themselves) like head piece, veiling, lace work, purse, notions shoes , all DIY for all centerpieces, 2 lighting fixtures and 10 Chinese paper lanterns for Inn patio. mostly, I love the outdoors and rural life. But mourn the loss of most local stores for everything. And hate the time delay and premium prices of online stuff. Finally one petticoat. Hope it is the right one since the fit affects bodice alterations you said you might need to do.

We're not sure yet about when we're going on a honeymoon. I bought a dress for the reception. It's a high low in a silver grey!! It's lace too with a beautiful ribbon bow belt.
You're great with ideas for the extras I've gotten!
I love how you refer to Audrey Hepburn! She was lovely! That's what I want to be is lovely, for my wedding! I'm too old to be the princessy bride, or sexy bride, but lovely would be wonderful!!

My FH is here, so i can't try it on yet!! He's setting me back....lol
I live in a rural area as well. It's about 45 minutes to anything big. It's frustrating because of being pretty dependent on the internet. But I do love the country.
I finally got the cutter for the invitations so I can work on them...lol
