Hi everyone!

So, little issue for us right now, I don't want to change my last but he wants me too. We aren't traditional at all but for some reason he is really wanting me to change my last name. I suggested we both take each others and he doesn't seem to be on board with that (well he just jokes when I bring up that idea). I just feel like taking his last name is sooooooo outdated. I have accomplished so much with my last name (which I brought this up and his reply "you can accomplish new things with a new last name" which is so not the point. My name is me, I'm afraid of losing my identity. I can't change the name on all my diplomas and awards. Anybody else dealt with this?

Do you get to tell him what his last name is? If not, he doesn't get to tell you what yours is.

Your name, your choice. If he's unwilling to consider a compromise then clearly you taking his name doesn't mean enough to him to find a solution that works for both of you.

Agree with this ****% I love my family name and my degrees are under my maiden name, but I am so excited to be a Caudill! I love that that’s just another way that we can be a unit. It’s something that you guys will have to seriously take the time and come to a solution, without blowing each other’s wishes off. Good luck!

By no means do you have to change your last name. I work in an industry where many women are career professionals and their full name is tied to their brand and a name change even after marriage just doesn't make sense. Keep your name Smiley smile

I feel like he should respect your wishes to keep your last name. You're an adult and a strong woman who can make her own choices!

I live in Puerto Rico and we don’t change names here.
It would be really weird for me to take my FH last name. My name is my identity and taking his last name wouldn’t make me any more or less married so... what’s the point?

In Puerto Rico we don’t change names, and we also use both our last names (father’s & mother’s). Example:
Annick Rosa De León (my dad’s last name is Rosa and my mom’s is De León). So we always share our name with our kids.❤️

For me, I'm going to be assuming my fh's last name. So Andrea my Last name-His last name. It works great for me. My FH never forced me to take his last name though, he pretty much said it would be nice but it's my choice. But yeah, your FH can't really force you to change your last name, and a lot of people don't. Wishing the best for you !!Smiley heart

But you would still be changing your name. It still wouldn't be the name as you say that you have accomplished so much under, the name on your degrees and awards. You said you don't want to feel like you're losing yourself by changing your name. So why change it to something that's not a part of either of you? You would still be changing your last name

This has been a conversation in our house too. I'm rather attached to my last name; my parents had the same last name when they met, so literally everyone I am related to are MyLastName. FH thinks it's "weird" when a married couple doesn't have the same name. I told him my hesitations and he resigned himself to me not changing it, and catching flak about it from his very conservative parents. I'm an older bride, too, I've got a career with MyLastName. Still, the idea of sharing that with FH has started to appeal to me.

You may find your opinion on the topic changes over time. You have plenty of time before your wedding. Consider all your options and do what feels right.

Symbolizes a family to me. My family. Makes sense to not change it professionally but at the age of 36 I’ve never been more ready to be a part of my own little family in every way, shape and form and that definitely includes sharing our last name. Hell, I get choked up about it! Do whatever your heart desires— you can’t go wrong if you follow it. X

It was more so why am I changing my last name for some tradition when I have accomplished so much. Didn't understand why we were following this tradition when we aren't traditional. But completely changing our last name is a compromise. It's more exciting starting a new legacy rather than taking on someone else's just because its common place.
