Donation in lieu of favors: wording for table cards?

E & G, on December 30, 2012 at 10:34 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 9

My fiancé and I are making a donation to a cause that's very special to both of us, instead of doing favors at our reception. We plan to put table cards on the tables to let guests know of our plan - has anyone out there done the same thing and do you have examples of how the table cards were worded? Also did you place one at each seat or just put a couple on every table? Suggestions are appreciated!

I personally have never gone to a wedding where the couple, in lieu of having favors for their guests, requested their guests make a donation to their charity. However, FH and I went to a wedding where in lieu of gifts, the couple asked their guests to make a donation to the local animal shelter.

Just to clarify, we are the ones making the donation, not asking our guests to make a donation (hello tacky!) I am just wondering how to word the table cards that say something like "instead of favors, we have made a donation to xyz charity, etc"

@Erica, I'm doing the same thing. I'm placing a business card-sized card at every seat. One side will say,

"In lieu of favors, the bride and groom have made a donation in your honor to Sheltering Animals of Abuse Victims. For more information about this wonderful organization, refer to the other side of this card."

Then on the reverse, we'll have some info about SAAV.

We went to a wedding where they had little pretty cards in the shape of bookmarks on paper that had three places guests could choose from if they had a prefrence, in lieu of donations. One was a childrens hospital one was an animal shelter and the other was a disease. They stated what their plan was and said if you had a prefrence to write it on the back of your name card on the table. That's how they would divide where the dontaions would go and otherwise they would just pick one for you. It was really sweet.

I have also seen nothing on the table but on the guest book table a 8.5 x11 paper framed explaining where they gave money and what the charity is about.

I think it is a WONDERFUL generous idea. Leanna T's idea is great. I personally would much "favor" a favor of a donatino in my honor than a crappy monogramed shot glass or something similar.

Erica, I'd contact the charity you have in mind. In doing the research for my blog, I look at a lot of groups (Puppies behind Bars, Unicef, Heifer Fund) and many of them have cards and/or table tents already made up. I like that I idea because it looks more 'real'.

I love the idea. No one needs another coaster or little jar or.....well...anything.
