Dog moms! - NWR

AlmostMrsE, on June 30, 2016 at 10:25 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 24

Taking our baby to the vet tomorrow. 3 year old Am staff. He had an ear infection in his ear a couple months ago. He started flapping again and scratching at his ears and licking his paws. We looked in his ears, the left looked pink and clean while the right ear was filled with black gunk.

Anyone else experience this with their dog?

ETA: we treated previous ear infection with some stuff we had to shoot in his ear from the vet

We had this problem when ours was little. Does he swim or get in water a lot? Basically we had to used a Kleenex to clean out his years after he went swimming to get the moisture out. Could be that, or something more serious. Hoping for the best for you and the fur baby!

My parents boxer used to get the black gunk in her ears. My parents would just clean it out occasionally and wasn't anything to worry about, may be different with different breeds. Hope all is well with your pup.

Our Griffin gets ear infections super bad. They're gross. This last time, a piece of grass (y'all know the nasty cheat grass with the arrow shape) stuck in her ear. We have to take her every year or so to get a medication for her, no matter how hard we try to keep her ears clean. Some dogs just get infections.

He doesn't go swimming, he gets a bath once a month because he's scared shitless of the tub lol. Last time they said it was a yeast infection (no black gunk then) and now we are going to a different vet who has amazing reviews. Google says yeast infection, and he could be allergic to wheat. He's already on prescription food for pancreas issues :/ I just hate that he must be so uncomfortable

One of mine gets them all the time. We keep the extra mess when we can. I haven't found anything to help avoid them.

I was going to suggest it could be an allergy and then saw your last post. I hope he feels better! Poor baby

It's most likely yeast and cocci, or just one or the other. They'll do a cytology to figure it out. No big deal, but I hope your pup feels better soon! Do you clean his ears on a regular basis with ear cleaner?

My dog gets ear mites all the time and we use R 7M ear mite medicine because it has a higher concentration of pyrethrins than most other eyemite solution

    https://www.amazon.com/Miracle-Care-R-7M-424224-Treatment/dp/B00063KGK0

we also use Mal-a-ket ear wipes, it's anti-fungal and anti-microbial wipes which help a lot

Am staffs and other bully breeds are notorious allergy sufferers, and itchy skin can lead to secondary infections. Generally speaking If you only notice itching in the warmer months and things calm down in the cooler months, you're looking at seasonal, environmental allergies. Itching all year round=food allergy. I would definitely mention itchy feet at your appointment as well.

ETA: the pic you posted is most likely a yeast infection, not mites. A mite infestation looks more dry and crumbly, like coffee grounds (ew, I know)

It will help a lot, I promise. Ask your technician to make a suggestion for ear cleaner and have them show you how to do it properly. It may cost some money, but consider it an investment by preventing future ear infection visits and keep your baby healthy. Smiley smile

Ashely, I definitely noticed last summer he was itchy. This summer is worse, so it's probably seasonal.

My dog has this a lot. We were told it's like some people having more earwax than others, dogs can have the same issue. You're just supposed to clean them out as much as possible to avoid build up. The meds for it are expensive :-/

    Pibbles are allergies suffers.

Try adding a shot glass fully of apple cider vinegar to his food (or squirter it down his throat if he wont eat it). It helps.

Also you need to clean their ears once a week - just wipe them out. Once you have it under control its not a big deal.

Some benadryl might help for the general itchiness or adding fish oil to his diet (check with the vet because of his pancreas issues - is he diabetic?) Benadryl is typically 1mg per pound - but with his pancreas check to make sure.

Best of luck - over all prevention is the best clean those ears!

My dog gets it too and it looks just like that. This is what I have: https://www.amazon.com/Pet-King-Enzymatic-Solution-Ounces/dp/B0025YOJXS/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1467343582&sr=8-6&keywords=ear+cleaner+dog and I just clean out his ears at least a once a week and eventually it will go away. Hope that helps!
