Does the groom have to match the groomsmen?

kirackle, on March 14, 2017 at 9:35 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 37

My FI and I have decided that the groomsmen will wear gray three piece suits from theblacktux.com with burgundy ties and white pocket squares. The bridesmaids will be in burgundy. However, I really want my FI to stand out and be a little more formal. It is his day too. He keeps telling me that he doesn't care what he wears and that he wants what I want.

One of the real wedding photos on the rental website had all the groomsmen in our suit choice and the groom in a black tux. I thought that seemed like a great idea, but my FI likes to be traditional. I also asked my fmil her opinion and she acted like I was crazy and that this has never been done before and would confuse everyone.

Does the groom have to match? And if anyone has seen this at a wedding how did it turn out?

Groom doesn't have to match. I think that would be fine if they were in gray and he was in black. My FH is wearing the same tux, but will have a lilac vest and white tie and the GM will have lilac vests and ties.

H wore the same black tux as the groomsmen but with a different boutonniere. This is my personal opinion, but I hate the look of colored anything on the groomsmen. It reminds me of prom. We considered a white bow tie for H, but he wanted black.

The groom doesn't have to match his groomsmen. "Traditionally" the groom's jacket and pants match the male attendants but his vest or some other feature are different and match the bride more closely. Best wishes!

My FH is wearing a three-piece tux and a bowtie. Groomsmen will be wearing a different two-piece tux and a regular tie. Originally they were all going to wear the same tux, but FH saw a tux he liked better and cancelled the first rental. They outfits will definitely complement each other.

I don't think groom has to match groomsmen. We're doing grey suits for the guys, charcoal tux for FH. He looks better in darker colors and he wanted this look. There was a thread about this a couple of weeks ago that included pictures of the groom not matching and they all looked nice (to me).

They must match or else the marriage is invalid because the evil spirits put a curse on you.

I was in a wedding last summer where groomsmen, groom, and fathers wore assigned shades of gray, they looked great without being mismatched

My FH will be dressing to stand out from his groomsmen. We figure I don't match the people standing up with me, he shouldn't have to match his either.

I had the opposite situation- my FH wanted to look different and everyone else thought he should match the groomsmen. We ended up getting matching suits but will have a different tie and boutonnière.

Honestly, I think they should all have matching suits, but have a different tie/bowtie. As of right now, our groomsmen will be wearing plum bowties and FH will be wearing a plum tie. Our other option is the groomsmen wear plum ties and FH wear a grey tie. I like the bowties personally though Smiley winking. I would definitely make sure your FH sticks out though.

Our groomsmen are wearing grey pants and vests rented from an online tux rental. We purchased a suit for FH is a similar, but slightly darker color. So he will have a jacket and be in a slightly different color.

The groom doesn't have to match the groomsmen perfectly, but it is nice if their outfits compliment each other Smiley smile Frequently people will have the groom stand out with a different colored tie or vest, or a different boutonniere or pocket square!

What do you think about having the groom in a grey tux?? That would coordinate more with the rest of the guys!

Thanks everyone! I needed some validation because of the slight criticism from my fmil. She is not pushy thankfully and I am pretty strong willed, but she seems to disagree with a lot of my stylistic choices so I question myself.

I personally like the idea of having the groom stand out. FH is planning on having black tux with his groomsmen in a charcoal tux.

My FH will stand out during our ceremony. He is a Marine so he will be in his dress blues. After the ceremony and pictures, he is changing and wearing a suit so he doesn't ruin the dress blues.
