Does the DJ MC also??

Mek1801, on August 17, 2017 at 9:23 AM Posted in Planning 0 24

Hey all- I'm wondering if the DJ at your wedding is also MCing. I'm having a destination wedding in Punta Cana and the resort told me the DJ will not MC so we have to pay an additional $500+ (on top of the DJ being $1000 for 3 hours) if we want to have someone make announcements. Is this absurd?!

(But the DJ package comes with a mic...so wtf is the mic for if he won't speak into it?! Lol)

I'm considering having a close friend that's a guest (if willing) to announce the bridal party and the dances and then maybe a bridal party member announce the cake cutting, etc.

Idk- can I do that? Or would you just pay the $500+ to have a man stand up there bored til he has to make an announcement?

My DJ package comes with a mic. They offered:

    a) I can do whatever I want with the mic.

    b) for a TINY extra fee the DJ can make announcements or,

    c) for a high extra fee I can have an MC all night, dressed up, etc.

I went with b. The fee was only $35.

Idk if it makes a difference, but I'm getting married in PR.

Yup. That's half the reason we hired a DJ lol. They should be keeping the reception flowing, with music and announcements. That's ridiculous to pay extra for something like that.

Yeah our dj is in charge of all announcements and keeping everything on schedule during the reception. We didn't even have to pay extra to have him do the professional music.

Our DJ is MC-ing the event at no extra charge. That seems pretty steep just to make a few announcements. Perhaps it's a language barrier thing and they have to hire a DJ fluent in English for that so they charge more. We are not doing anything extensive, just announcing us and the bridal party when we come in, announce the important dances, announce the speeches, and announce cake cutting (I'm not doing a bouquet toss or any games or things like that). If they are giving you a mic that you can use for whatever, and you aren't looking for much in terms of an MC, then I would suggest asking a friend. They would still have the opportunity to enjoy most of the reception, and they would probably feel touched that they get to be a part of your special day.

Thanks! I might be stuck using the resorts DJ (there's usually a high upcharge to bring someone yourself).

If they refuse to let him MC, I'll just have to have a friend make a few announcements. They really nickel and dime you!

My DJ was also the MC, but I researched other entertainment companies and some of them actually have a separate MC. Odd though that they'd want you to pay an extra $500 just to have an MC. That's absurd.

We ran into this in Long Island. Anywhere from $500 to $1000 to add MC to our package. I do enjoy that the contract states MC will not be annoying. Who determines what is annoying?

    @Mindy L. That's crazy it's an extra $500-1000 for an MC!

Maybe I should take up being an MC as a side job! Haha

In many cases they do. Some companies offer an MC separately, and not all of them charge extra.

Can you talk to other companies or have you already hired this one?

No I have not paid/hired The DJ yet. All of the coordination is through the resort-I just tell them what I want. I just found out I CAN hire my own DJ if I want but it'll be $150 fee. Still cheaper than $1500! So I might do that.

I'm not sure if he doesn't speak English or not. Good point and maybe that's why. I asked to speak to the DJ company directly as opposed to through the resort so I'll find out.

Most DJ's so MC as well, or at least the ones I contacted/hired do.

I'm doing a DW in Jamaica and got told the same thing. The DJ is $466/ hour and the MC is an additional $350 total. Totally ludicrous. That's how DW become just as expensive as weddings at home. It's a way for the resort to make money.

Don't even get me started on the "DJ with sound system" vs "DJ without sound system" price difference hahaha.

Yes I feel like for DW they can get away with upcharging crazy amounts because they force you to use their vendor...and if you don't use theirs, they charge you another fee! Crazy way they make all this money!

Wow! Well NYC I'd expect it to be a lot more expensive...

Our DJ was also the MC. He explained that he sees it as his job to keep the party flowing, make sure the timeline is executed and coordinate with the other vendors to stay on the same page and adjust as necessary, and keep the energy up.
