Does the bride really need a garter on?

I have time before my wedding but I'm trying to soak in as much information and tips as I can. I was wondering is it really a big deal to have the garter removed at the reception? Do I really need to wear one?

We skipped the bouquet and garter toss. I'm just not into it, and I don't think DH had an opinion about it either way.

I did buy a garter with DH's favorite football team (on etsy), but that was just for after the reception lol.

I wore a minimal garter just for me but we didn't do the toss.....I would be mortified experiencing that and uncomfortable being a guest having to watch it haha. We went straight to bed after the wedding but the next night when we got some alone time I wore the garter with lingerie (I don't think he noticed, oh well. Haha.)

I'm not even wearing one. FH has no interest in them. I'm glad.

At my best friend's wedding, her BIL was only 5 at the time, and when her husband went up her dress to get it, the 5 year old tried to do the same thing. It was so awkward.

I plan on doing both the bouquet and garter toss but inviting everyone to participate. I also plan to give whoever catches it a little gift for catching it. I had a friend who did the garter toss but waited til then to put it on so, you really don't need to wear one. I also do not think it would be weird to only do the bouquet toss.

Didn't wear a garter as I thought the tradition was tacky.

I did do a bouquet toss, however.

I will be wearing one for my something blue but not sure if we'll toss the matching toss garter. There are no more hard and fast rules about "old-school" wedding traditions anymore. Do what you want. I'm a 80-year-old trapped in a 33-year-old's body so i tend to go old-school for a lot of things. Smiley smile

Garter/garter toss is a hard "Nooope" from me.

As for your question about still having the bouquet toss but nixing the garter, it's fine. Many many people do that.

I think even if you wanted to do the toss you could just have a garter off to the side so that he doesn't have to reach up your dress in front of everyone... I haven't talked to FH about this aspect of the reception but we do have a lot of single friends (we'll be the first married) so he might want to do it still. No way is he reaching up my dress in front of everyone though.

I wasn't planning to do it but everyone I've talked to seems to say it's something fun. So I'll probably just do it. I'm sure it'll make us laugh

Thank you so much for your suggestions! I think the FH and I are just going to do the garter removal in private.

You can do a bouquet toss and no garter toss.

Personally I am doing the bouquet toss because I think its fun but you couldn't pay me enough to have a crowded room watch FH go under my dress for the garter ...

Garter removals are gross. His hands stayed over my dress until that night in the hotel room.
