Does a 22.5 Inch Waist Sound Right?

janet, on March 1, 2018 at 9:58 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 33

I ordered my dress online last week in the bridal size that my consultant recommended, but I start looking over sizing charts and realized that the dress is marked to have a 22.5" waist. I do not have a 22.5" inch waist, nor have I ever seen clothing - ready to wear or designer - with waists that small. Am I missing something here?

Unless you're looking at the sizing chart for the designer for your specific dress, it's probably nothing to worry about. All sizing charts are different, but if you're concerned, call the shop now and ask them. They did measure you before you ordered it, right?

I'm interested as to what happens with this- that's pretty tiny.

I would contact the site that you ordered the dress from. That doesn't really sound normal at all. I think it would be better to contact them now before they start shipping everything.

Grab a soft measuring tape and measure for yourself. (or use a string and hold it up against a straight ruler to measure).

I'm confused though, did the seamstress measure you at a 22.5 and you are concerned? Are you reading the sizing guide correctly? Is the sizing guide for the designer you ordered?

It was the sizing chart for the specific designer, of course. They measured me, but I'm not sure if they're anticipating lost weight, that the dress sucks in, etc.

The dress waist measurement isn't my waist measurement. There's about a two inch difference. I'm definitely reading the size guide correctly and it's for the specific designer.

Then you were measured incorrectly. Why did you place the order yourself, instead of through the bridal shop?

Because that's what they told me to do?

Something sounds off, I would definitely reach out to the bridal salon to make sure you are getting the right size. Usually they order this for you and if they make a mistake it's on them, not you.

I'm a size 2-4 and my waist is around 26-27 inches.

I'm baffled why a bridal salon would have you come in and try on dresses but then tell you to order it yourself online. This seems like a recipe for disaster and a cause of major headaches for them.

Why would a consultant, who likely earns commissions on sales, tell you to order online where she wouldn’t get any money from the sale? I would get on the phone with them and see if anything can be done.

What would "be done"? This is what they recommended and told me to do. I did it. I'm confused how that conversation would go.

The sizing chart I saw online was for the dress, not a general sizing chart. I'm curious if people who had similar style dresses found that the waist measurement on their dress differed from their body's waist measurement.

They may be able to change the size dress on your order or get you in touch with the designer to do that. I’ve never heard of anyone’s dress measurements being smaller than a person’s body measurement.

Call them and explain that you looked at the size chart and the waist measurement on the size they told you to order is X inches smaller than your actual waist is. Ask them why there is a discrepancy and verify that you should have ordered the size that you did. Ask them if you can come in to get re-measured to be sure.
This doesn't sound right and if it is much too small, you are going to be paying an arm and a leg in alterations to have it fixed if anything can be done at all, and I'm guessing that none of it will be the bridal salon's responsibility since you placed the order yourself.

Sarah, I ordered the size they recommended. I don't know what other size I would request.

One that has the same measurement as your waist? Just call the designer and see if the bridal salon told you the right size to order.

If it doesn't fit I can just return it. It's not the end of the world.

Asking why the waist difference is a good idea.

Okay then don’t call them and you’ll have no leg to stand on against them if the dress is too small and can’t be let out.

Then it's not a big deal. Many brides purchase gowns that are made to order and take 6-8 months to come in. Ordering a backup is not an option for most people and they can't be returned - that is what everyone here kind of assumed I think.
