I’m getting ready to go look for dresses in a few weeks when my mom comes out to visit. I was wondering if I should invite my future mother in law or not? We aren’t very close and she has never met my mom and I don’t know that they’d be able to stand each other or if they share different opinions in dresses I try on. I want her to feel included and don’t want to hurt her feelings by not inviting her but I also don’t want it to be an awkward experience for me if she does go.Smiley atonished

Did anyone else invite their mother in law? Or have a similar issue?

If you are not close with her and your mother has not met her then I would say no. If you really want to include her you could be nice and ask but I would ask your mother first if she minds you FMIL going as your mom may have already assumed it would just be he two of you and want that special time together. Also, if you wanted to have both mothers met you could always meet for lunch while your mother is here.

My youngest daughter invited me, both her sisters, and her FMIL. I thought it was really nice to include the MOG, especially since she has all boys and might not get the chance again.

I was struggling with this dilemma as well. I had planned on having her come with me to a fitting, but with time contraints (my wedding is this November, and I am in school with limited time to get to a bridal shop) that I ended up actually picking out my gown on my 2nd trip out with my mom and grandmother. I will be seing my FMIL tomorrow for the first time and have to let her know I have already purchased my dress. I have a great relationship with her & wouldnt want to hurt her feelings, so I plan on asking her to come to the fitting once the dress has arrived at the shop.

At the end of the day, It's all your personal preference. If you only want your mom there, I see no issues in that. Its yours and your FH day, no one elses. Smiley smile

I invited her. She said she was going to come, but didn't show up Smiley xd She's a very sweet woman, she just doesn't keep track of dates/plans very well.

I’m going to invite FMIL to the dress fitting only. When I go dress shopping I plan to have my mother and sister with my only.

I did not invite my FMIL. I knew how much planning with my mom means to her and I know and value my mom's opinion. My FH also has three little sisters so I figured she would have her chance to go be Mother of the Bride later that I wanted it to be more special for my mom.

I went three different times and when I went back to "say yes to the dress" I took my mom, best friend, and brother's wife. The oldest of my FH's sister (15) was the most upset that I didn't invite them (FMIL and three sisters) to go dress shopping. But you have to go with what you really want and think about who's opinions you truly value. I loved having just my mom because we were able to go through so many more dresses than if I had gone with a larger group.

For me, I didn't invite her because we are not that close. I just invited my bridesmaids, my mom, and a couple aunts who helped raised me.

I personally am not inviting mine. I’m only going with my mom and sister in law (my brothers wife). My FMIL is very opinionated and while you want honest opinions, you don’t want to be stressed. There are so many more ways she can be involved. Just sitting with her going over invitations, having a “thank you” lunch with both her and her mom (might break the ice).

I did not invite mine, my fiance doesn't have a close relationship with her so I am not comfortable around her. She's also the type of person that makes comments that make people feel like crap about themselves, and we do not have a similar style at all so she wouldn't have been a good asset to the group.

I didn’t invite my FMIL to either dress appointment that I had. First I went with my mom, sister and other bridesmaids, then the second time when I found my dress I went with Mom, sister and grandma. I was most comfortable the second time, when I was with only family. I didn’t invite my FMIL because I didn’t really need her opinion. She has completely different tastes than me, and I didn’t need her input when I felt it wouldn’t be helpful. I felt like she wanted to come with, but I wanted a special moment with my mom and I got to have that. It was amazing! FMIL never mentioned to me that she was hurt because she wasn’t invited. If she had, I would’ve told her that I wanted to be with my mom as we are extremely close.
Bring who you want to shop with, who you will be comfortable with. That’s my advice!

I’d say only do it if you two are close and you truly want her there. I plan to invite my fiancé’s Mom when I get my dress but we have a good relationship. I lost my own mom about 2 years ago, so i kind of want more people there that day to keep my mind off things.

I invited my future MIL. She wasn't able to make it the weekend I went, but I know she really appreciated the invite. However, it was also an easy decision for me to make because I know she would have gotten along with my family that did go with me.

I'm in the same boat as you and don't plan on inviting mine. In fact, I'm only inviting my mom out of obligation really, as I'd prefer to shop alone.

I'm not inviting mine; we don't really see eye to eye and I don't want her to ruin my big day. You do what's best for you

I invited my FMIL and my future Aunt and I couldn’t be more grateful that I did. They were a huge help and I loved having them there. They got to meet my mom which is nice so they kind of know each other on the wedding day

I didn't invite either FMIL's (FH's mom or step mom). I only took my mom shopping with me. I didn't think I'd find my dress in the first shop I went to but I did. If you want her there then invite her, if not don't invite her.

To be honest, it didn’t even cross my mind to invite my FMIL and we have a good relationship. Dress shopping was something that meant a lot to my mom, aunt, and grandmother, women who have known and supported me my whole life. I have other things to include FMIL with. This felt more personal to me.

    Hi!
i just went weddingn dress shopping with my future mother in law last Saturday. I didnt take her when I went with my mom because when I told my mom that I would invite her, she said why you inviting her, your sister just took me and your grandma (ugh hate being compared) but yeah..

i think it's a good experience to go alone with your mother in law. When we went she will just say it looks nice, or that she likes the other better. She was very nice. And then afterwards we were talking about her son(my fiancee) and I asked how he is with her at home and if I can learn his favorite dish by her. So we kind of bonded.

If you think hunk they won't get along then maybe have them go to deprecate wedding shops with you. But I think it'll be a good way for you to get to know her more personally.

    Good luck!

If you’re not that close I would say don’t invite her and have that moment with your mother. I did not invite mine cause she does not support our relationship.

I did not invite my FMIL. Reason being, she is very stubborn and opinionated. If I did not like her choices or if she did not like mine, she would be very rude about it. She is that way with just about everything. Not to mention, she is in her middle 70's and her style and mine are worlds apart. I just didn't need that on the day I was looking at dresses.

In this case...if there is nothing that she has done or said to make it seem like it would be weird, I would go ahead and invite her. Chances are she will decline, but at least throw it out there. Ya know. If she has always been nice and friendly, I would.
