Do you have to have a groom's cake?

BayouBride, on March 4, 2016 at 11:46 PM Posted in Planning 0 29

Is it poor etiquette to not have a groom's cake? My FH doesn't seem to really care if he has one or not, so I was thinking about just making each tier of the wedding cake a different flavor to save money. Has anyone else done this?

    It's not necessary

We're doing a 4 tier wedding cake with alternating flavors, chocolate cake with chocolate mousse and vanilla cake with banana mousse. It represents both of us without having to have a separate groom's cake.

I didn't even know this was a thing until WW, I don't think it's necessary. Especially if it's not important to your FH

    No it's really unnecessary.

Groom's cakes are completely unnecessary. Typically, they are presented/cut at the rehearsal dinner.

I think they're nice because so often, the wedding is all about the bride; the groom's personality rarely gets to shine through much. I am getting my FH a groom cake as his little part of the wedding. We are not having a traditional wedding cake, so the groom's cake will compliment our dessert of donuts

It's not necessary but I'll probably make one anyway. I asked him and he doesn't seem to care. I'm going to make it myself as a surprise for the rehearsal dinner.

I think it's more of a Southern tradition, I've never been to a wedding with a groom's cake.

If your looking to save money and your wedding cake had enough servings for everyone than I say skip it

Definitely not southern. Happens up here in the north and I remember my mom talking about them when I was in California.

Being said it's a nice idea. But it's not necessary.

I've only ever been to 1 wedding that had a grooms cake and it was something she surprised him with. So I definitely think it's unnecessary.

Poor etiquette? Hardly. Every wedding I've been to that's had a grooms cake, half of it went into the trash since there was too much cake.

If FH doesn't care, the different flavors per tier is a great idea. Use the money towards something else.

No. You don't "have to have" anything. Everything is up to you... Except if you have a wedding you have a reception... There are no hard-fast rules anymore.

No, not a requirement. I am surprising FH with one at the RD...just for fun, it completely represents him.

I've only been to one wedding that had one. They had donuts as the dessert, but when they did the dessert ceremony, the bride surprised the groom with his cake. I don't think you need one though.

I would skip it all together since he doesn't care either way.

No. Our cake is OUR cake, not a bride's cake, so we don't see the need for a groom's cake.

Plus it's a cheesecake, which is different already!

I think it's kind of tacky to have a groom and brides cake
