Do our wedding bands HAVE to match?

FH is so set on our bands matching, but his taste is the polar opposite of mine. I have a white gold e-ring with diamonds in the band. I would like a wedding ring with channel-set diamonds in the band. FH wants a two-tone gold band. He's insisting that ours match. FTR: I HATE YELLOW GOLD! This will...

This will be the ONE bone of contention between the two of us. Grrrr......

They don't have to match at all. I disagree with the sentiment that "ours match to show our passion and look like wedding bands." No offense, but mismatched rings don't show that you love each other less or are any less married.

I used to think that they had to match. I don't think that way anymore. FH's band is black diamonds and mine has white diamonds. They represent yin and yang.

DH and mine don't match. DH found his band about a year before I found mine.

A local jewellery store was having a going out of business sale, his ring was normally $430, got it for $188. It is a plain white gold band that has a slight hammered look to it. Mine is also white gold, but has about 6 small diamonds in it with a small curve; to fit next to my e-ring. My parents don't have matching wedding bands and they have been married for 35 years. My grandparents didn't either and they were married for 66 years before my grandfather passed away.

I got a totally different, mis-matched band, and I love it.

My e-ring does have a matching band that is beautiful (but expensive), and FH and I agree that maybe for an anniversary someday he'll get it for me. Smiley smile

Ours is as different as can be. No need to match.

    Ours don't match.
My husband was prepared to purchase a wedding band that matched mine (rose gold), because he thought that was the expectation. He even went to the same website where we'd bought my rings and was on the verge of making the purchase, when I stopped him and asked if the rose gold band was what he really wanted. It wasn't. I encouraged him to find a ring he was excited about. After a few days of research, he found one -- a yellow gold band with a slight twist in the design to resemble a Mobius strip (he's a math major and likes math symbols). It looks nothing like my rings, but it was perfect for him.
Our vows actually included a line about respecting the individuality of our spouses' interests We work well together as a couple, but respecting spousal autonomy is also really important to me. Ultimately, The look of the ring is up to the couple in question.
