Do NOT want to invite my sister to my wedding!!

ToBeMrsJBSoon, on May 11, 2015 at 11:35 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

I'm having a VERY small 20-person wedding, and only 3 people in my family are invited - my mom, dad and sister. No wedding party (if so, parents will INSIST sis is in it)... My sister is a complete nightmare. She's a narcissist to a billionth degree... so much so that when I asked my mom to go with me to look at dresses my mom INSISTED that my sister come too because it's been my sister's life long dream to try on wedding dresses - yes, that means that my sister would be trying on dresses WITH me even though she's NOT getting married and doesn't even have a boyfriend!!!!!

My sister is an extremely belligerent alcoholic who will DEFINITELY make a scene during the wedding, and she will DEFINITELY make the day all about her, which is her general and constant MO.

My parents are very upset about my decision not to have my sister at my wedding, but they're not paying for ANYTHING. I feel terrible that I have to make this decision at all, and I just hope I'm not going to regret it.

If it what you really want for your day I say do it. We are eloping (people know this) and there are a select few that just can't let it go but it's what me and FH want so were doing it!

You'll create a lot of bad blood by not inviting her. She's your sister and while she has faults, she's still family. It's your call, of course, but by being so bothered by her actions and going out of your way to avoid things (wedding dress shopping, no wedding party), you're letting her get to you in a very unnecessary way. Tell your sister and your mother that she needs to wait her damn turn and if not, go alone or with a friend. Don't be afraid to have a bridal party and not include her - your bridal party is for YOU. That being said, it's your day. Do what is going to make you and your FH the happiest.

Do you have a relationship with your sister? If not, I would assume no love lost but, this would be very hurtful. Think carefully about the impact that this will make on your family.

    It will work itself out.

I also have a nightmare of a sister, and she will not be at my wedding. My parents are actually thankful to have some time away from her.

We had a situation with DH sister. She's crazy and causes so much drama, constantly plays the victim and hates if people don't pay attention to her. We didn't want to invite her but we thought we would regret it later on. We actually regret inviting her because of the drama she caused. She actually wished us divorce at the wedding. We no longer speak to her. If your sister is as crazy as you say she is and you won't be upset not talking to her then I say don't invite her.

Have you been able to talk with your mom about your side? It seems your parents are pushy about her?

I don't think its unreasonable to not want her there, but beware: she may find out (and I wouldn't be surprised if your mother helped her) when/where your wedding is and show up anyway.

Also, I want to add its really shitty of your mom to insist you allow your sister to come dress shopping so SHE could try on dresses. . . I am not surprised your sister is so narcissistic when your mother treats her like she's the end-all be-all.

Melissa, you totally hit the nail on the head. I KNOW that's how my sister will act at the wedding. It's kind of a no-brainer for me, but it WILL mean the end of our so-called 'relationship' either way, so I'd rather NOT have the drama and ruin my wedding and just accept that she's going to be mad and not speak to me anymore (we've gone YEARS without speaking in the past so whatever...).

Fiorella, it's impossible to talk to my mom about my sister (my sister is 43 and lives in their basement...) because my mom has a co-dependent relationship with my sister and blames herself for my sister's shortcomings, which my sister takes FULL advantage of. My dad is easier to talk to about it, but there's little he can do without pissing my mom off. He just kows to it now Smiley sad

FH is not inviting his sister and at first I thought he was crazy for it BUT now that I see her true colors, fuck her....someone that is so selfish doesn't deserve to share the greatest moment in our life with us....bottom line (I am kind of bitchy this morning as you can see).
